hard to imagine the caribou hunting being shut down like that. A sad and frustrating story. There were so many when I was a kid their demise just leaves me shaking my head.
That being said I always thought ptarmigan were the finest eating upland game. I really enjoyed hunting them out on the peninsula While guiding out there. I won’t be making it up this year, been hard on me.

August ptarmigan eating lingonberries and blueberries are fine eating. March ptarmigan that have been chewing on willow buds all winter long, not so much. I like to start pups on ptarmigan as they are easy to see and mark and just the right size.

My shorthairs all started on fall ptarmigan. Don’t recall hunting them in the late winter as a kid, perhaps Dad thought the same as you. We always waited for the berries.
