I don't choose to shoot them or recommend them, but I do try to keep the flame alive once in a while just to appease HT's most prolific RUM hunter

Hey Ruger Forums. This is my first post. I'm interested in a hunting rifle. I've been doing well over 15 hours of research on this. I don't want to have to buy a new gun after this for a while. I've narrowed down the Ruger American but not set and stone on it. I would have it chambered in a .308 Win. I would need to be able to knock down deer, elk, and bears at 500 (max). Any recommendations. I am thinking a leupold 3-9x40mm scope. Please throw some knowledge at me.

Super happy with the Ruger American in 7mm-08 that I bought for my son. It was a youth model, but now that he is a little older I will be putting on an aftermarket stock, most likely Bell and Carlson.

The $300 Ruger is more accurate than my $2500 custom built.......not as pretty, but who cares.

I would not hesitate to buy another Ruger American, great gun for anyone.

I don't recommend magnums either. I'd buy the kid a .270 and be done with it. mtmuley
