Gobble gobble Spring Turkey 2025

This is my third year trapping this farm and my second bird from it.
Today is the one year anniversary of me killing the first bird, it just so happened today was opener for us.

I had hens come in first and then heard some gobblers getting close and close.

At 8 this guy and another long beard came in.

My first double beard ever!!!! I’m so Jacked up. This stuff is so much fun.

Killed them right in the strut zone I made.

Back to my favorite unit, came around a corner to find a Tom strutting with a few other birds near it. Backed off and waited to see if they might head my way as it seemed they weren't spooked yet. No go so I backed off, made a big loop and set up close enough for them to hear in a totally different direction from where they first saw me.

I could see all the way around except over a hill down to a bog fringed lake. Gave a few calls and in just a few minutes a couple of birds peeked up from down the hill. Maybe 20 yards. I hadn't been expecting that and at least one saw me, but it was a Jake and there was a decoy to hold it's interest too. When I shot two birds flew off which threw me. Turns out there was a third below the hill I hadn't seen. Thought I saw a longer beard on one.

Gorgeous day with (finally) not much wind, our first season this year has been fantastic (some years it's a real crap shoot with weather, I have shot birds in 6 inches of snow and toughed out a rainy windy cold season as well). I like being one of the first out there.

20 gauge turkey 870 shooting hevi shot 6's.

Tagged out in Kentucky this past Friday. Had birds gobbling at daylight, but they weren’t in any hurry. This guy finally showed himself and was about 100 yards away. Took him 15 minutes to work his way in to my set up and he gobbled 5 times at crows as he was coming. The Lord blessed me with another great hunt and season. Saw 8-10 bulls bedded before daylight on my way to my set up. Seeing elk never gets old.

Had somebody walk in on top of me today. Surprised it took that long into the season. Just clueless when I talked to him about how it's not just disrespectful but dangerous for both of us.

Despite that, I did get to mess with 4-5 hens for about an hour. Didn't want to fight, just talked back and forth with me a while. No gobbler in the group from what I could tell. Gotta imagine there's one in there though so I'll revisit them in a couple days. Gonna work the next 2 days, hopefully the return to normal temps will make the birds more talkative by Thursday.

Oh, and for the reptile lovers20250421_081410.jpg20250421_084131.jpg

Walked in on you hen calling?
No, walked in on me before daylight. I was on the logging road about half a mile down. Heard his truck pull in so I knew what was coming. I was in an area I wanted to be but I also wanted to go back further if I didn't hear any gobbling. He walked past me even after I talked to him and told him to find another piece to hunt.

Why would anyone ever do that? Stupid plus totally disrespectful.

They justify it with any number of excuses. His were "I've got a camera back here I need to get", "this is a big section but that's the only access point", and "there's always a bunch of people hunting here"

This year is actually a much better year compared to the last few. Not uncommon the past couple years to see 3-4 trucks parked on a 100 acre section.

Could he see you were setup of it was before daylight?

I was standing in the middle of the logging road and had a conversation with him
You see some wild stuff on public. Last week I pulled into a piece of public here in Oklahoma to find a guy setup with is two decoys in the middle of a open road. When you pull off the county road the national Grasslands road goes for about 400 yards to a parking area. Instead of leaving his truck at the entrance so people could know he was there I guess he parked in the parking area walked a couple hundred yards up the road and setup. God only knows how many guy's pulled up on his setup that day. On a different piece in the same area a couple years before I watched a idiot shoot a Gobbler out the roost before shooting light.

Hope you called fish and wildlife.

Hunted a state forest nearby this year and knock on wood, I was totally blown away by how everyone stayed out of each other's way. Was expecting the worst being that were only a couple hours from Chicago. I'd imagine archery deer is a different story though since it's not a draw like turkey or firearm deer season.

Last year I made a big loop around a piece. I was the only one parked there when I walked in. As I get close to where the trail back to the car picks up, there's a powering right of way as well. I see a fan as I'm about to come into the opening. I started to get ready but I noticed the fan was stationary. Turns out some absolute moron had walked in on me and set up a strutted decoy in the middle of the trail where he had to have known I'd pass back by. I really thought about sprinting out there and grabbing his decoy and running back to the truck.
