Gobble gobble Spring Turkey 2025

I thing you've got a solid plan going forward. Last piece of advice I can give is less is more. Calling, decoys, blinds, everything. And be patient turkeys are creatures of habit, but they have a habit of being weird, so they may come to a cow feed station the same time every day but they may come from a different direction every time so enjoy it, enjoy the process, and keep in mind that NOT killing the bird just means you get to hunt him one more time

Counted coup on another bird this am. My dad bought a property about ten years ago that was clear cut a few years before he bought it and had just been left to regrow naturally. I've taken this property on a sort of a pet project that I spend a few weeks in the summer, and a few more in late January and February working to turn what is a forage and cover devoid landscape into A1 nesting and brooding cover. last year was the first year since they cut it that I've seen a gobbler in there, and today was the first day I've actually gone in and sat to a bird. I called one up off the roost, but let him go,and ended up moving up the hill and found myself between two birds having a shouting match over an imaginary featherd harlot. It's a small success story, but it's a satisfying one.

What's the preferred method for cooking your turkeys? A buddy of mine ground all of his into turkey burger mixed with bacon, red pepper flakes and fennel. Never been a fan of turkey burgers but that was damn good.
For the breast I either smoke or slice and fry depending on the year. The wings and drums get slow cooked until tender. The boneless meat we use in enchiladas, turkey sandwiches, or whatever else sounds good. Thighs sometimes slow cooked sometimes ground if I have enough to justify.

This weekend was our adult Learn To Hunt turkey hunt , what an enthusiastic and diverse group.
The weather has been wild lately but settled down near perfect for the hunt.
14 new hunters with their mentors had great success.
9 turkeys were taken.
after a tough day Saturday my mentee who had never been hunting before was able to shoot a beautiful 25 lber this morning after we drew him out past some hens that were still roosted.
He used a .410 as did most of the hunters.
Lots of other wildlife too , we saw ospreys ,eagles ,trumpeter swans plenty of deer including two albino deer.
Plenty of good food and stories, as always it was a great time!IMG_4933.jpgIMG_4944.jpg

Looks like they had a great time, all smiles! The kid on the far left top pic was pretty brave to sport that haircut in the timber with that many new hunters around!!

My son had a trap shoot Saturday so we couldn’t go until yesterday. We took his buddy along who hasn’t ever hunted before. Started shooting trap with my boy and nephew, so he wanted to turkey hunt this spring. So I took them along with his dad yesterday. Finally had one commit, he made a great shot. He came in spitting so that was cool for the boys to hear. View attachment 367044View attachment 367045View attachment 367046

Then the ailment my wife was suffering from Friday night she said was food poisoning turned out to not be food poisoning so I’ve been in the bathroom or on my death bed since an hour after these pics were taken.
