Plan on going into fiordland in may next yr after the ballot. Looking for a couple of guys to join me, must be fit and resilient, not for the faint hearted as it can rain up to or more than 1000 inches per annum. Permits are free, a heli ride to a hut as Basecamp. Archery is fun, although I'll be carrying a rifle. Pm if interested.

No interest yet?! This hunt looks awesome but not within my realm of possibilities. I will be on the south island in may this year to hunt though but not wapiti.
To be honest they are crossbred, so Fiordland deer. Good luck with your hunt, public or guided?

It will be public and solo, I'll be doing a helicopter flight in and trying to find a tahr first then a deer after a move hopefully. I will be going after the roar so hopefully glassing stags will be more of a possibility.
Any input or suggestions are welcome!

If you pm your Tahr spot I might be able to guide you thru messages, I've covered most of the South island.

1000 inches! That is 83+ ft per year! 25+ meters! Are you sure about that number?

I want to go to New Zealand, but not to go SCUBA diving.

Having long bow hunted NZ a couple of times.......There is steep, wet, and thick....and then there is New Zealand steep, wet, and thick. Day after day....soaking wet soon after leaving camp.....then sliding down the muddy slopes and not being able to see more than 20 yards. An occasional roar but a long time to get there and then not being able to see through the underbrush left me bewildered.

20yd vis, long bow perfect weapon
There’s gotta be a dry season right??
Lol, if you get 10 day of good weather that's lotto.
That's why you have a hut as main camp.
Character building stuff, but being lucky helps.
I enjoyed all my trips into there, and local knowledge helps.

You must have been on what we call the west cost, Fiordland is beech forest country, much more open.
