Fuel cost for your hunt?

Pulling a travel trailer it adds up in a hurry!

I usually average around 10 mpg pulling our travel trailer and it is a 2,500 round trip to where I hunt in Wyoming.

250 gallons X $3.50 (gas truck) = $875. Throw in another couple hundred miles at least driving to pick up ice, etc. and it will be pushing that $1k mark.

Without the trailer I could probably average closer to 18 mpg and that would almost cut the gas bill in half. $485 instead of $875, but the wife and kid go with me and there is no way they would stay in a tent.

Just wondering.... Trailer have a forced air furnace? What kind of mileage do you get from your trailer batteries? Assuming you use a generator for re-charge? I am usually good for three nights, but keep it on low.

Averaged out or trip to Colorado in the past and we usally went through about $600 to $700 in fuel. This year looks like if fuel stays around $4.00 a gallon are fuel bill will be around $1,000. Boy hunting isn't getting any cheaper. How bad is your fuel bill on your hunting trip going to be this year?

I does not matter. Going no matter what. tags in 3 states (4 if I draw AZ sheep:hump:), across 6 separate hunts and seasons, mostly all solo so no cost sharing. It is what it is.

Making loop from wv to Montana the northern route , senic routes into yellowstone down to arches into nm back across 40 to okey now. Then up 44 and 64 to home . Looking like $1200 with extra runnin around. Most places is 3.65avg. Its only money enjoy your days lol

At current prices it'll cost me about $900 round trip.Plan to go out twice this year.I agree, its only money, and I can replenish that after I return home.Missing out to hunt out west because of a little extra in gas money is crazy!!!!
I still believe it will be going down before Sept. The republican presidential candidates are all over this and the economy in their speeches.Obama will be forced to do something with the gas at least since he has no idea of how to help the economy. My guess is $3.25- $3.30 by Sept

just got back fron n m trip,,,3000 miles round trip @ 14 mpg in my dodge cummins diesel,,,came to around $900 for fuel,,,final score: oregon deer and elk 0,new mexico deer 0,new mexico antelope 1,,,at least i got 1 critter this trip,,,good expierience but pretty expensive for 50 lbs of meat.

Think I am going to print this thread out and leave it somewhere my wife will come across it... (deleting my post from the thread, of course :D )

I may have less wife points to recoup if she sees what you guys are spending on fuel. I don't envy you...

As for myself - meh... minimal in comparison. :)

Pulling my travel trailer up to Wyoming and back ended up running just over $800 for me. Just under 2,500 miles round trip and averaged 10.35 mpg for a total of 235 gallons of gas. Prices were down a bit thankfully and I ended up averaging right around $3.40 per gallon.

Ended up eating tag soup and that was one of the "special" tags so that hurt worse than the gas!

My trip to New Mexico coming up in a few weeks will be 900 miles round trip so that should end up running just under $300 in gas if I get about the same mpg as I did going to Wyoming and back.

Sorry, just noticed this question. The trailer does have a furnace, that's the only way my wife would make the trip. I have one of the harbor freight 45 watt solar panels (they almost always are on sale for $150) and use 2 of the type 31 batteries and can make it 4 days pretty easy with that setup. I think we could make it 5 days if we tried to push it and set the furnace on low. We've changed out all our lights to LED bulbs as well.

For a 1 week stay we generally fire up the generator one afternoon, my buddy has his trailer there in Wyoming as well and he brings his generator and we charge up both trailers at the same time. On my New Mexico hunts they are 5 days and I generally just hook up to the truck if I need to charge there and let it run a few hours. I've also thought about adding a 3rd battery and seeing if I can make it a full week with that setup without a charge.
