Football General Talk

All I needed was the Vikings to score a td in the last 20 minutes and I was due a huge payday for the wild card weekend parley I did. Intense and stressful final minutes of that game and they couldn't even give me that. Vikings still suck in the playoffs, should of known better.
Even vikings fans don't put $$ on the vikings -- not sure what you were thinking.

I watched a play that I've seen many times over the years. Small changes are made over the years, but the main script is unchanged.

It became crystal clear over the last two games that Darnold is not good when the lights get real bright. He held the ball too long, too often last night. He was not alone in coming up short, but he had a leading role.

Vikings nation will endure, we are used to this. We will get our hopes up...some, but will always be on guard over how it will play out. We've seen the play many times.

Hate to say it but the Rams looked great. Next weekend should have better games. These were duds.

JJ is such a little media ho trying to steal the spotlight with his timing. I hope he hires Deon so they can milk cowboys fans for everything they can while being irrelevant during the playoffs, well other than front office drama.

No doubt Jerry and Deon would thrive in the spot light, conflict or not. The question is would the team thrive with those two constantly demanding attention.

Schefter just said Deon may be the next coach of the Cowboys.
I called this back in November. Time will tell. But let’s be honest, is there a coach that can be successful in Dallas in the short term? They are pot committed to a 32 year old mobile quarterback who is no longer mobile and can only take 1/3 of the snaps because he’s injury prone. AND, they have an owner, GM and front office that want control of everything and all the accolades. Jerry jones did his post game press conference at the same time as Mike McCarthy who else does that as a successful NFL owner?

The Cowboys hiring Deon is not very different than the Lakers hiring JJ Redick.

The Cowboys made a fatal mistake signing a mid tier qb to a very large contract. The Lakers have an old, past his prime player, being paid as thou he was still playing at an elite level.

Deon is likely a better coach than McCarthy. He'll have a very hard time overcoming a broken roster.

The JJ McCarthy Era has officially begun in MN.
If I was another NFC team I’d call and thank the Vikings if they go with JJ McCarthy. He’s played in 1 nfl preseason game. The rest of the offense and the defense are ready to make a deep playoff run and contend for the Super Bowl. I think the Vikings are prime for a proven qb to come in on a 1 year deal and contend for the Super Bowl.
No, that 1 year QB is not Aaron Rodgers. He needs to be put out to pasture.

I wouldn't be surprised if Deion had success at the NFL level. There isn't anything he has done professionally so far he hasn't succeeded at. mtmuley
Well, I can agree with his proficiency for sports & business success...it would also receive 24/7 free advertising if Shedeur is part of the package

Do the Vikings not re-sign Darnold?

Do the Vikings not re-sign Darnold?
2 questions I think the Vikings have to ask themselves and answer are is the body of work from Darnold better than what we can expect from McCarthy and if that answer is no, who, if anyone, is available for a 1-3 year deal that they feel can lead them to where they want to go if either Darnold or McCarthy are not the answer.

We have been playing this game since Culpepper. We need to start cycling through cheap rookie QBs until we hit. Maybe it’s JJ, maybe it’s not, but an “off the streeet vet” doesn’t get us there. This roster is not at all ready. We need two decent CBs, two decent Gs, two decent earth moving interior D lineman, a punt returner who isn’t a trainwreck in waiting, a stable placekicker (maybe Will, maybe not), and at least one more S. If we don’t fill some of this, Russel Wilson, Sam Darnold, Justin Fields, Derek Carr, etc not doing anything if they put us back in salary cap hell. But if CJ Stround, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Jared Goff, or Hebert etc. want to come play for us for $30mm one year I would definitely welcome them.

Definitely agree Rodger is rapidly approaching late stage Unitas and has to just walk away with a little dignity (very little at this point).

Do the Vikings not re-sign Darnold?
No.

They just got out from under a huge QB contract that ate up too much of the salary cap and hindered the rest of the roster and the ability to add to it. They carried some of that big cap hit this year, and even with just a little bit of cap freedom were able to make some great impact signings with Greenard, Van Ginkle, and Cashman. I don't think they want to give Sam, who is now as big a question mark going forward as kurt was coming off of an Achilles tear, the kind of money that once again, hamstrings them cap-wise.

Couldn't be any further than the truth.

They were a 6.5 win team by Vegas to start the year. Looking back at that, vegas was wrong, but they still overachieved to a level never seen before, and it was fun, but this is not a SB team. If you think this team is ready to pop, you're on drugs.

They tricked up guy that had been thrown on the scrap heap and rode it until the wheels fell off.

Look at the roster up and down. Need a RB. Jones was a rental that couldn't stay healthy. Interior OL is held together by bubblegum and yarn which was evident any time they played a DL and DC that were competent. Interior DL lacks an alpha that can pass rush, which in today's game is as important or more than pressure on the edge, as it gets there faster. The CBs are old rentals. Potential/borderline HOF safety may retire. Another excellent safety in Bynum probably won't be back.

If you wanna look at statistics, they all lead back to Darnold playing above his pay grade for most of the year. The run defense was great statistically because the offense was getting ahead early in games and teams were forced to pass. When teams didn't let the Vikes get a lead, they were able to run the ball easily.

Vikes have a lot of work to do to catch up to the true contenders in the NFL, and giving a boatload of money to a guy that turned back into a pumpkin in front of the entire world, twice, doesn't solve it. You move ahead with a HC that has proven he can make chicken salad out of chicken $#!T, let him have his QB, on a rookie scale contract, and see what they can do.

McCarthy has won everywhere he's been. He was in line to compete for the starting job before he got hurt. They made the smart move and had him do the full repair instead of the partial to make sure he heals correctly for the long term. Now, you turn it over to him and use your $65M in effective cap space and build a complete team around him.

And the folks saying you have to keep darnold because of what he did this year, statistically, compared to the "unknown" in McCarthy are the same people that were saying the team was going to be awful and win 3 games without kurt and that Jefferson is going to ask for a trade if you get rid of kurt, and that they were semi-competitive with kurt. Look what they did with a bust QB and some cap space to build a roster.

I have no fear letting darnold walk for McCarthy. If McCarthy is such an unknown and a potential disaster, then why was everyone saying a couple weeks ago that any team that needs a QB in the draft should be willing to pony up this years 1st round pick plus more to trade for McCarthy? Plenty of folks saying if he'd have stayed in college this year he'd be the 1st overall QB off the board.
