Football General Talk

Elite QB coaches paired with sufficient baseline talent equals winning. The coach could be a OC or a head coach who was an OC, but defensive head coaches (even good ones) have typically struggled to develop QBs. It is not Campbell that makes Goff good it is Ben J.

For example, Vrabel is a really good head coach, but Ben J would be a much better choice for any team with a not yet established top 10 QB (think Bears). Vrabel needs to go somewhere like Cinci where a top 5 alpha dog QB can take care of himself and deal with rotating OCs that hurt QB development.

I fell asleep before the end of last night's game, but saw enough to make a few impressions.

The Lions' offense is really really good.

The Lions' defense is just awful presently.

Purdy isn't a top shelf qb. The one interception, he air mailed for no good reason. The 49's could not beat a banged up Lions' team at home. That is a long way from the promised land.

Then there is no such thing as a top-shelf QB, 'cause every one of them has airmailed a few passes this year (and every year).

Quite a few forks were stuck in the one-and-done 2020-2021 Chiefs.

I was telling some friends the other day that Vrabel would be perfect in Cincy for the exact reasons you just stated. Let Burrow help pick an OC that has a similar philosophy and let them cook up the offense, while Vrabel flips the defense.

The last true "hack" the NFL has that isn't IMO being utilized enough or maybe at all, is paying coaches/coordinators well. Everyone likes to talk about how you can't hire a defensive minded HC anymore because they'll lose any competent OC to a HC gig. I call BS. I think that forward thinking front offices will and should start to pay their coordinators and asst coaches enough to keep them in place and successful. There is no salary cap for coaches. As a Vikes fan, I'd love to see them offer Flores enough money to turn down a mediocre HC job. It won't work for every situation, but I think that if you have everyone on the same page and there is mutual respect and good working relationships it would work. Egos need to be set aside, for sure. Like I said, this is something that won't work for everyone, like the panthers, the jags, jets, etc., but for a solid stable organization, I think it would. Think Steelers, Chiefs, 9ers, Vikes, GB, DET.

I did not say he's dog shit.

Mahomes
Allen
Jackson
Burrows
Herbert
Goff
Stafford
Hurts
Love
Daniels

There's ten of the top of my head that I'd pick over him every day, all day. That's roughly a third of the starting QBs. So, he is somewhere in the middle. I'd take the present version of Darnold over him also. A tougher decision Prescott or Purdy? At least the 49's haven't overpaid Purdy...yet.

Best thing that ever happened to Baker was leaving.

Seems like good coaches are probably more important that an "elite" QB. Campbell and O'Connell. LaFleur, and some of the others seem to be drastically underpaid.
I think this is a very solid reason why high draft picks fail. They go to organizations like the jets, bears, and browns that are dumpster fires and have no business developing a quarterback.

And that is why I'm all for college QB's pulling an "Eli" (well actually an Archie) and telling dumpster teams they won't play for them.
There is enough (legal) money in college football now to go back to for a year if needed.
I wouldn't let some 2-bit, mom-and-pop, pisspoor franchise that's failed multiple other young QB's fail me, or a child of mine. Darnold, Baker, and Goff are perfect examples of this. If they'd have gone to competent organizations initially, they'd more than likely not have the paths they've had.
Let the $#!t teams wallow in their own filth and let the franchise erode, or force them to change for the better.

Exactly the situation I was thinking of. Look at Ryan Leaf, the other quarterback in that draft.

I think you're thinking of Peyton. Peyton and Leaf were in the same class.
Eli was in the same class and was traded from the Chargers to the Giants for Phillip Rivers because Eli/Archie told the Chargers he didn't want to play for them.
