Football General Talk

It's the most dominant entertainment product America has ever seen - and it hasn't happened by accident. Being number #1 will always attract critics. Many challenges indeed, but few better options if you decide to remain inside on a Sunday.

I love FB from peewee to the pros, but nothing matches the speed, athleticism and strategic considerations of the pros. Some games are going to be great, some are going to suck, such is the nature of all sports.
I'm aware I'm barking up the wrong tree on a football thread. But I started playing rugby in HS and never looked back. In football, there's about 7-10 minutes of live ball play out of a 60 minute game that takes 3 hours to watch. Mostly commercials, replays, watching huddles. I still watch a couple playoff games, but damn it can be tough to sit through a football game anymore.

If you're willing to learn the rules, rugby is a really good game to watch. Two 40 minute halves that take about that long (clock stops rarely) with a brief halftime, and the ball is in play about half that time. Yet way more action. And way less specialization as all the players have to be able to do everything.

Obviously this is an outlier of phenomenal play, but an as example of what can happen in 3 minutes on the clock...

GO LIONS!! I'm anxious to see how Za'Darius Smith will fit in. He's no Hutchinson but he'll definitely help! Much needed!

Played it in college (club). It was a blast. Fun to play, fun to watch. Would recommend to anyone who likes contact sports. But not nearly as strategic as American FB and not nearly as extreme athletic capabilities on display.

As your fellow NFC North travelers will tell you - the 20% of games he actually plays healthy will be amazing and then set you up for the heartbreak of the other 80% where he is hurt. Some players are just injury magnets - he is one of those.

For me, one of the best things about football is that it is not constant action. Makes it easy to do other things while watching - sharpening tools, making something, loading something. It keeps me company while I do something else. I do not have to be staring at the screen 100% of the time or feel that I have missed something significant. It is a lot like golf. :) :)

I might agree with the strategy but probably not with the athletic capabilities. But to each their own!

Can't argue with that...
