Football General Talk

Athletes good enough to get some of that NIL money were already getting paid. It's called a full ride to a higher education. Isn't there a thread on how expensive college is and loan forgiveness? According to that thread I think a full ride is pretty good compensation for playing a game. But I really don't care if their paid or not, I do however think it's gonna completely ruin college sports.

Markets decide compensation. If a $50k/yr tuition is market, fine. If $50k/yr tuition plus $100,000 cash is market, fine. It is not up to fans, what players should be paid or not paid.

If colleges and fans want true academic athletics then actually do that - coaches paid like faculty, not CEOs, the cost of tickets to games just cover nominal grounds keeping of modest facilities and can be had by the public for $10, and players allowed to live their lives however they see fit and focus on class over practice. But instead the colleges and their fans want a pro-level experience, pay coaches like CEOs, build huge expensive facilities, charge near pro-like ticket prices, have players that must focus on practice/prep over the true student educational experience, and generate billions of dollars of profit for the colleges.

If they choose the latter then they are operating a commercial sports business not an academic activity and they must follow the laws of every other business. The NCAA has been violating basic anti-trust laws and the principle of freedom to contract for decades and somebody finally stood up to them - good for them.

VG, I am not quite in agreement. Those billions are not going into the general fund coffers in any real way that I can see. They are going back into the Atheletics Departments to pay salaries, and facility mortgages. No one has stood up to the NCAA in any meaningful way. That players get paid now, is just what needed to be done to keep the gravy flowing. Does anyone really care about the rest of the university? Only that it is paid too many tax dollars to keep afloat - at least down here, that is the prevailing attitude.

Nobody forced me to run college cross country, nobody forced my best friend/neighbor to play college baseball.

Nebraska does it’s thing in Dublin, throwing an interception as they are attempting a game winning drive v Northwestern.

Our intrepid sideline reporter broke the story about the refreshment stands. No internet, no way to take payments, so the beer was free.
