Friday morning found us navigating the forest of northern Florida in search of wild hogs. Our guide led the way as we covered quite a bit of ground. Jameson was selected to be the first shooter, and I would be second. After about two hours, we spotted several hogs sleeping under the root ball of a storm downed tree. Their all-black bodies contrasted with the surrounding forest colors. Jameson and his Dad quietly stalked closer for a good shot as excitement mounted. Jameson (age 10) leveled his 30-30 carbine and squeezed the trigger as I watched with anticipation. As the shot echoed across the forest, the hog bounded away only to crash to the ground after a run distance equal to about two school buses. We followed and found the animal struggling to get up. Jameson leveled the rifle again and ended it with a head shot. His first shot was fired at an extreme angle into the hog's body and entered within the stomach cavity and exited through a lung on the offside.
My hunt was equally exciting. We jumped two large boars and I fired a shot as the animals ran through the thick forest but my aim was off which resulted in a miss. At least it was not wounded. My next shooting opportunity came about an hour later when three hogs were spotted within the downed limbs of another large tree. One boar lifted his head to look right at me as I raised my 30-30 and centered my scope sight on his forehead. At the shot this hog dropped; he never knew what hit him.
Our guide dressed out and partially butchered our hogs for us just before we left. Our wild hog hunt was a great success and we brought much tasty pork home for future meals.
