I am still trying to figure out the best approach for my brother and Dad, who have 3 points. They would go for cow only. I've read all over the website and am completely confused!Correct, and then you can buy another point, when that opens, so you would have 6 next year.
Last years regs and odds will answer those questions in 5 minutes.
30% seems like pretty good odds.I read the regulations sorry if I am not being specific here. This is what I have come up with;
It appears the GEN Any Elk tag they would not draw with only 3 points.
type 6 option for unit 91 oct 1-Dec 31st states 300 quota in the REGs. Website states type 6 will not use your preference points. Under NR demand report it states, for unit 91: 48 issued, 129 first choice, 32 second choice. I am assuming the 48 is the non-resident portion of the 300 total. So the odds of drawing type 6 NR were 30% (48/161).
There is no way to increase your drawing odds for a type 6 tag.
It just seems odd that there is not an option to guarantee a cow tag without waiting 5+ yrs to get enough preference points for the GEN tag.
I looked at that but it does not appear there are any type 4 tags offered in unit 91. This is our fault for not planning this years in advance. It was not this hard in 2017!With 3 points there are many type 4 (full price) cow elk tags that would likely be 100% odds to draw. That's your option to get a guaranteed cow elk tag.
I considered that, but if I’m figuring correctly they would need to go from 3 to 5 or more due to point creep so 2 more years. Or just keep applying and hope odds are in your favor to draw the type 6.Maybe yall should buy a point this year. Come scout the area. Stop by the regional office and talk with the wardens. Make a better plan. Go fishing and come ready in2026.
All the elk are on top. Always!Climb That Ridge!
Climb That Ridge!
Climb That Ridge!
Climb That Ridge!
And the packout is always downhill! All the elk are on top. Always!
welcome to the over inflated Elk hunting we all get to deal with now that everyone wants to hunt out west. I know nothing about WY but I'd look at what you can draw and then go from there... not have a spot you hunted once and try to hunt there with little to no draw success. Maybe I don't understand what you are trying to do? it sounds like you just want to be able to hunt now and not wait? Im. not into guided hunting but maybe you can get a tag more easily that way?It just seems odd that there is not an option to guarantee a cow tag without waiting 5+ yrs to get enough preference points for the GEN tag.
If it's as steep as it looks and if the trees/brush are as thick as they look, carrying all your gear up that ridge will be almost impossible. Once you cross the Dry Creek willows and start the initial climb, make your decision to go to Plan B before you're too exhausted. Better yet just go to Plan B! One important thing about elk hunting and elk country, one has to know his/her limitations and be able to make sensible timely decisions.Hello,
For general background see my post in the Who am I section. I'm 38, 5'-10"/205lbs, some knee issues and need to get in shape and hunted once same general area but a few miles south with a guide in 2017. I know this is a popular area.
My brother has 3 points, is there any general cow elk tag he can draw for the oct rifle season (he has 2 bulls already). Yes i've scoured hunt planner and have not found an obvious answer to this, especially in terms of likelihood to get a tag, 10%, 50/50, almost guaranteed...
I can archery (w/ license) and rifle hunt, correct? If I fly out in September to scout, to me it would make sense to bring my bow with.
About when does the snow melt in early summer at ~8k ish elevation, if I wanted to fly out and scout in April or May ish timeframe.
I am looking at locations to scout, mostly based on pressure and access. For example, off Dry creek there is a dirt jeep trail Wickup Knoll and I expect alot of hunters to come in that direction and head up the various valleys (Mikes Hole Creek is one example) to hunt the bowls at the top of the valley. I am thinking about coming in from the back/north opposite side of the mountain from all that pressure. Its also steep, 1400ft elevation gain with thick timber/sparse openings. I would choose a ridge line and go in about 1/2 mile. Is it unrealistic to try to crawl up the mountainside and out a ridge line like that? Obviously, I would go out and scout it first, what I am doing now is planning my scouting locations.
I will get in shape, but I need to be realistic.

And you never step on or trip on rocks or get tangled up on tree branches. And the packout is always downhill!
