I am still trying to figure out the best approach for my brother and Dad, who have 3 points. They would go for cow only. I've read all over the website and am completely confused!

I understand the reduced cow/calf option which appears to be ~9.7% draw odds.
Is there a full price cow only tag and if so how many preference points do you need for that option?

I read the regulations sorry if I am not being specific here. This is what I have come up with;
It appears the GEN Any Elk tag they would not draw with only 3 points.

type 6 option for unit 91 oct 1-Dec 31st states 300 quota in the REGs. Website states type 6 will not use your preference points. Under NR demand report it states, for unit 91: 48 issued, 129 first choice, 32 second choice. I am assuming the 48 is the non-resident portion of the 300 total. So the odds of drawing type 6 NR were 30% (48/161).
There is no way to increase your drawing odds for a type 6 tag.

It just seems odd that there is not an option to guarantee a cow tag without waiting 5+ yrs to get enough preference points for the GEN tag.

30% seems like pretty good odds.

With 3 points there are many type 4 (full price) cow elk tags that would likely be 100% odds to draw. That's your option to get a guaranteed cow elk tag.

I looked at that but it does not appear there are any type 4 tags offered in unit 91. This is our fault for not planning this years in advance. It was not this hard in 2017!

Maybe yall should buy a point this year. Come scout the area. Stop by the regional office and talk with the wardens. Make a better plan. Go fishing and come ready in2026.
