First cougar cubs verified in Michigan in more than a century

We had one on trail cam last spring in SWMI. It spent a month or so here then moved on.

I had back half on cam in SW MI as well. So damn proud of that photo right up to my fairly new HP laptop hard drive crashed. I had another photo of one from a trail cam sent to me. It was dam big!

I’ve never heard of any DNR say they are escaped pets for mountain lions. Young Males usually follow rivers and most dna tests show ours come from the black hills in SD. As populations expand, the females begin to find new ranges and a new population forms. Mountain lions are no harm to humans. They are not lurking behind every tree like most miswesteners think.

In the 90s, I believe there were a few declared lions found in iowa.

Yeah, lions are state listed endangered in MI, somebody got in trouble for shooting one a few years back in the UP.

Indeed. The fields are equally dangerous. A few years back, one guy pinned a bear under his combine (deliberately) in a cornfield so he could run home and get his gun and shoot it. Typical, everyday Iowa heroism.

I know many people who were hoping that incident would lead to bears being protected in Iowa but as far as the state is concerned they don’t exist.
