Feel the quake?

Had an earthquake here in SW Montana at about midnite last night. 5.8 magnitude centered near Lincoln. Shook my house here in the Root pretty good. mtmuley

Yep, felt it up here in Great Falls too. Scared the heck out of my 10 yr old daughter...she's never been through one before. Crazy how quickly the earth can make you feel very small.

Real good shaking at my place. Felt one aftershock too about 5 minutes later. I briefly wondered if the caldera blew but then realized if it did I'd be screwed so went back to sleep.

I felt it in Trout Creek. Pretty wild. I think I'd be terrified if a big one hit.

It rattled the heck out of Butte. Just got the fireworks tapering off and we have an earthquake during a thunderstorm. I wonder if we're ever going to get a decent night's sleep again.

Interesting link. An earthquake of the same magnitude caused 12 million in damage in California in the 1970s. This one broke some liquor bottles at the Wilderness Bar in Lincoln and some jars of jam at Walmart.

I was talking to my wife about the Richter Scale last night. It is logarithmic, and every increase in magnitude is a thirtyfold(roughly) increase in energy release from the prior magnitude. So a 6 on the Richter Scale is 30 times more powerful in than a 5, and 7 would be 30 times more powerful than a 6. That is energy release which is not the same as shaking amplitude. In terms of shaking amplitude, each magnitude is 10 times more powerful than the former. So the shaking that occurs with a 7 on the Richter Scale would be 100 times worse than a 5. At least that's how I understand it. Last night's shaking was legit, I can't imagine something 100 times worse.

My kids slept right through it.

The house here in Missoula shook pretty good. Had a picture fall but nothing major.

One of my friend posted last night (paraphrasing) that all of the California friends will have to bear with us a bit - it's like when an inch of snow falls in CA and folks go a bit over-board.

Felt it in Idaho. Shook enough to wake me up. I reported it on the usgs web site and went back to sleep. I was a little shocked when I woke up this morning and found out where the epicenter was. The last one that rocked the house like that was centered in Wells NV a few years ago. Apparently when you live in a 70 year old farmhouse built of poured concrete and cinder block you get to feel earthquakes from other states. If one ever hits nearby it could be ugly.
