Snake handling is quite common in Pentecostal Churches in Appalachia. They believe if you can handle a venomous snake and not get bit Jesus is with you. Likewise, if you do get bit that was the Lord's decision and he will cure you.

On a side note, my brother is a Pastor of a small congregation in the Midwest, not Appalachia. I am trying to convince him his church needs to have snakes to increase attendance. Everytime we go on a hunting or fishing trip I point out the many small churches we drive that past he could be pastoring at to benefit my outdoor lifestyle. I really think he should look at developing a mega church with helicopters and airplanes; A ranch in Montana would be nice to, you know for retreats and such. Thus far my pitch on all accounts has been negatively received.

I attend a Pentecostal Assemblies of God church but the pastor has made it clear that if anyone brings out a snake he's leaving
