I noticed the deer i shot yesterday had a pretty nasty gash on the inside of his shank on a rear leg. Commented to my buddy he must have caught a barb going over a fence. Maybe a couple inches of torn hide.
Didn't think much of it until this morning.
When I got home yesterday I hung him up outside under my shop shed roof and skinned him. Again nothing terribly noticeable at the wound site. Last night I transferred him to my refrigerator room inside the shop. Checked the temp this morning, holding at 35 degrees. It was then I noticed some " stuff" oozing out of the wound site. Started probing with a knife and opened up a 5-6" area between the muscle that had a pocket of coagulation. Figured it was a good idea to clean this out. In the process this tip of horn presented itself.
We have all heard of broadheads being recovered, anybody ever found antler?
Pretty wild, I didn't notice him limping, but from the looks of the ooze I'm guessing the injury occurred maybe in the previous week.
Then I got to thinking it was a strange place for a horn impact, since it was on the inside of the leg.. Most bucks probably keep mostly squared up when fighting. Makes me wonder if he lost a fight and got a final jab by a bigger buck while retreating. Somewhere out there a buck is missing about 1 3/8" of horn.20241123_084056.jpg20241123_084024.jpg

I killed a buck with a broken nose and a good cut on the eye once, but never seen a broken piece of antler stuck in one. That’s pretty cool.

That’s cool. I remember seeing a picture of a deer that had been shot that had about 4 inches of a main beam sticking out of of his front shoulder and I think I have heard of it one other time. Definitely not something you see too often.

I killed a bull with a 4-5” chuck of another bulls horn in it. Never even got a picture of it, dead phone and 3 miles in a blizzard at near dark. Killed a buck whitetail with a missing eye

Pulled an extra G5 out of a bulls shoulder, that was fun. Tied a leather boot lace around it and hung it off the euro.
I've found probably 8 to 10 broadheads in deer over the years. Some in some strange places, couple lodged against the spine. Damn tough.
