Leupold BX-4 Rangefinding Binoculars

EOY '24 - What Worked, What Didn't

I didn’t really change up much of anything for gear this year but there were a few constants that worked well.

Mystery Ranch sawtooth was great again.

Crispi Nevada and Guide boots work great for my feet.

Swarovski 10x42 SLCs and ATS 65mm spotter are still the best money I have spent.

I wore Kuiu guide and attack pants and usually simms cold weather shirts all season with a puffy when needed.

I still prefer being fairly old fashioned with rifles, and I just can’t hop on the FFP bandwagon, even though the Mavens look awesome. I’ve gone back to the simpler Leupolds that I’ve always had good luck with. It’s almost always too windy where I hunt to shoot over 400 yards, and I usually don’t shoot past 300-350.

I carried my .308, .270, and .338 this year and shot my deer with the Tikka .308 and 165 Nosler ballistic tips. It’s such a handy little rifle.

Didn’t work:

Kind of a PSA, but I shot a doubletap 10mm factory load in my Glock that blew the case apart, blew the magazine out, and locked up the gun. Fortunately the gun is none the worse for wear and still shoots just fine after I had it checked out. I’m now hand loading some Montana bullet works 200 gr hard casts instead, because I want to know that I won’t have an issue if I need it as backup on a griz. I carried my .44 for the rest of the season.

Since we’re also talking vehicles I should add that the ‘18 Tundra and falken wildpeaks is still the best hunting rig I’ve used. @TheJason is trying to talk me into a suspension upgrade for next year, we’ll see if I take the bait.

The suspension upgrade is amazing! I have all new everything all the way around. It was a dream! One of the main reasons I’m willing to put a new engine in the old beast.

I have upgraded leafs and shocks front and rear.

What did you go with for yours? I’m probably going with Dobinsons for heavy duty front coils and rear leafs, along with their shocks. Maybe a ranch hand or TDK bumper as well when I go to the heavier front springs.

What worked: Rattling! Rattled in my first bucks this year. Didn’t get a shot at them before they winded me and skedaddled; but hey, it still worked!

What didn’t work: the rest of my plans lol. From the turkeys getting hung up or going silent, to the aforementioned bucks running off, things just never lined up for me this year.

I keep my gear pretty simple and low dollar, so the only things I can really say are that I’m pleased with my smartwool merino base-layer hoodie, and my Rocky boots are looking to be replaced with something more waterproof. Probably just get a set of xtratufs again, idk.
