Pretty sure he is just joking @Straight Arrow . Very cool bull your grandson got. I like the crazy ones. It's obviously some sort of prior injury or he injured the antler right at the beginning of growth.

You trying to be funny? That's BS. That boy's bull elk is pure wild free roaming, albeit genetic abnormal antler twist very cool wildlife.

'Thought so but wanted to be sure. More recently have received info from two different parties explaining that the gnarly antler growth was more likely from an injury of some sort rather than a genetic trait.

Here's the deal. Since the "Let's see them" pronghorn thread is one of the most viewed on this site, and most viewed by lurkers, I am thinking we should do the same with elk and show how many elk guys on this site take.

This thread will be a "sticky thread" and be at the top of the Elk Forum, from here on out. It doesn't matter when you shot it, how you shot it, or if you were just the person helping, this is the thread to post elk pictures. No need to post a long story, just a pic and a few notes about the hunt.

Be as specific or vague as you want, as far as location.

Here goes.

Thanks for doing this. I hope this thread becomes as popular as the pronghorn thread. I know you guys have shot a lot of elk, so post 'em up right here, even if they have previsouly been posted on another thread.

Last day of cow only on national forest. Good memories (my boys were impressed with how fast their fat dad could run!). Family-style pack out of a bit over a mile to the nearest access finished at 11 PM. No meat lost! Overall, a great day!!

Got to go on a horseback hunt with a couple buddies, it dumped on us all of opening day then dropped several inches of snow Sunday. Yesterday we had a few hours of decent weather and got to riding. Found some elk on the trail and filled all of our tags.

Just sharing a few of the elk my blood tracking dogs have recovered this season in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming and the Black Hills of South Dakota!

This was my first ever elk hunt. Put in for a tag last year but didn't get it. Got it this year and was delighted. Boy, the planning was enormous but hard work paid off. Opening day started out a drizzle and a little snow, that eventually turned into a down pour and we quit at noon soaked to the skin and very cold. Danny, a friend, was there the whole time for support. Hadn't seen Danny in about 40 years. Here we are, two old men. I'm 68 and he's 62. We were pooped on Sunday and he suggested that we rest up, don't fight the weather and go back Monday. Got warmer gear all set in my Stone Glacier Sky 5900 (Blatant plug, LOLOLOL). We frigen set the alarm on my phone, miss it, and get up 2 hours later than we wanted to. Ever do that? LOLOL. I had scouted for 5 weeks in the area.

We get to the spot 5/8s of a mile 400' up hill to 6000' with me huffing and puffing. I'm from Florida, sea level, so give me a break!! At day break we hear shots 15 mins after daylight, and bugling just before the shots. They were where I figured. Over time we hear the bugling getting closer. Then at around 810am a herd of 3 bulls and 9 cows come out of the draw. 4 shots to anchor him, sure as hell didn't want him running back to private ground 200 yards away, and down he went. I was doing a naked jig. I never in my dreams could believe my first elk was a bull, a 5x4. Not huge but God what a great feeling. Some nice 27 yr old kid helped us get it back to the truck and get it on the hitch haul.

In the 5 weeks I've been in Montana the people are great. Even if I went home empty-handed, I figured that I had met so many great, friendly people. Thank you Montana, and the people of White Sulphur Springs for the opportunity of a lifetime. What a beautiful area.

Like they were on a string, they started moving and moving quite fast, heading in our direction. Head to tail, they stretched for over a mile.

They came within 250 yards and we let a couple hundred pass before we headed downhill to see if we could get a shot. They didn’t seem to even notice us and gave us a couple good cows for a toll and split up going in 2 different directions…

Had a small herd run across the highway just ahead of me on my way home yesterday. Stopped traffic in both directions. One raghorn bull in the back and the rest looked to be cows. The snow appears to have put them on the move.

Would you say you get calls to track bulls more than cows?

By the time a call is made are most of those elk too far gone to be salvageable?

Tracking dogs fascinate me, pretty sure I’ll be training at least one of mine in the future for it.

Fortunately I shot a young bull, and got the horns thing out of my system. Don't get me wrong, I certainly would be proud to shoot a huge bull. I'm more of a meat hunter, so if I decide to apply again, I'd be more likely to shoot a tasty cow. Good job!! Congrats.

Ive been on what I consider to be a pretty good streak.

‘18 my brother in law draw a tag in the bighorns that I had been trying to get for years. “Guided” him to his first bull

‘19 had numerous opportunities in MT and just didn’t connect

‘20 killed my first bull OTC in CO

‘21 “guided” my other brother in law to his first bull OTC in CO

‘22 drew a tag I’ve been waiting on for years in the Bighorns. Got this nice 6pt 1 hour into season

For ‘23, my wife who has never hunted before has decided she wants to try for one

CO's open air mountain meat market was generous this year.

After four days of packing heavy loads, I'm sunburned, the legs are tired, and I can'tstop smiling.

My son couldn't cut out of school, my hunting partner bailed at the last minute.....hunting solo is sometimes best.
