Elk Caliber and Bullet Choice - 2024

I've shot coyotes in the chest with them and had them make it 50 yards lol. Go figure. 32 grain vmax. Switched to 40 grains and haven't had them go more than a leap or a spin. Might be coincidence.

Have you tied the 35 grain Berger? Probably the best fur bullet for 204 followed by 40 grain Berger or 39 grain blitzking.

I'll have to look into them vmax Have always done me right out of the 22-250.

I'm going to try for a leftover cow tag for Wyoming in June.
If i can get the tag I'm planning on bringing 2 rifles with me. (A back up for just in case)

Rifle 1)
Weatherby Mark V Weathermark LT in 7mm Weatherby Magnum.
Probably running a 150gr bullet.
I have Nosler Ballistic Tips, Sierra Tipped GameKings, and Berger Classic Hunter.

Rifle 2)
Savage 111 in 7mm Rem Mag.
Have all the above bullets, plus 168gr Berger VLD and a slew of 160gr bullets.

Well, my rifle plans just changed today.

I've been trying to get a coworker to go with me to Wyoming.
He has a Tikka T3 in 270 Win with no backup gun.
He's interested in getting into reloading for it. So I ordered the dies and got some bullets for it.

Today found me at my local gun shop (not looking for a gun).
I happen to look at the used gun rack and there it was.

Ruger 77 Stainless with the Zytel stock in 270 Win.

I've wanted one of those since they were selling new. But couldn't afford one then.

270 wasn't my first choice for cartridge but since I already have bullets and the dies are on the way, i couldn't put it back in the rack.

I put it on lay a way.

The 140gr Ballistic Tips should do fine for elk.

Ill be using the 300 wm Berger 185 juggernauts again the wife shoots a 6.5 Creedmoor Berger 130 otm and has killed several elk with it....

I hope to be pushing 168 TTSX in my Mk V ULW 30-06 if I can find a load, otherwise back to the tried and true 165 Accubonds.

Picked up a 7mm-HT a few weeks ago, I'll give it a go this year.

Probably give a late season cow a dirt nap with my ancient 30-06 I've always used.

This year I'll be going with a CA Mesa 7mm rem mag and trying the 140 grain Sako Powerhead Blade. Haven't used this round yet, but was given a box and they shoot really well in my rifle so hopefully I can figure out how they work on game. If I draw a late season cow tag I may bring my 25-06 with 100 grain Barnes TTSX.

Still finalizing my archery set up and my rifle setup for that matter.

Trying to decide on a broadhead…

300 wm with Hammers of some sort, or a new Seekins 7 prc with a hand load…

I do love my 17 hmr with those v-max bullets though. @jpcoll01 may be on to something!
