2023 knocked down a Brute in Idaho Wilderness with a Browning X-Bolt 7MM Rem Mag shooting the Federal Terminal Ascent 155 Grain Bullet...Got a tag again this year...hope to ditto!

I'm thinking I'll take the 6.5 PRC with the 156 grain Berger but I'll have my .338 RUM in camp if I find that the .264 bullets actually do just bounce off an elk.

That’s been good medicine on elk for me: 6.5 PRC with 156 Berger. They rarely ever bounce off.

I’ve got a wild as* guess.

My philosophy is this..Elk hunting has enough changing variables. Weather, fwp, pressure, wolves, ect, ect. My rifle/caliber is the least of my concerns. Every time I put the crosshairs on the elk and pull the trigger my rifle goes boom and the elk dies.

Will hunt elk with all this fall, I'm not allowed to have favorites

If I draw the tag I am hoping to get, I think I could swap scopes on my Sako 338 LM to make it Idaho legal. I could then use 300 gr Bergers on something other than milk jugs and eastern whitetails. That, of course, would be contingent on my brother being willing to pack a 15.9 pound rifle in 4 miles for me.

Not very far. Plus, he didn’t fill his tag, passing on a spike, hoping that one of the raghorns behind it would give him a clear shot. Residents can be so picky.

6.5’s just don’t have any thump. You need an excess of thump to shoot elk.

Well I won’t be elk hunting this year. I will be shooting the 6.5 Van Franke 140 gr vld’s, or 7 rem mag 168 gr vlds.
