EF2’s 2020 Fall Hunt

Cold front in overnight with whiteout snowstorm. I had one group of 8 ducks come in to the pond, but they saw me and flared. 3 other singles flew down and I bagged these.

I took advantage of the blanket of fresh snow to look for turkey and deer tracks. I ended up tracking a squirrel and after I shot it I saw 2 turkeys run off, and a 3rd flew out of a tree. I might try to make a play on them tomorrow morning.

Evening sit in deer blind got to see a doe and fawn chased around by a little basket buck. The closest they came was about 70 yards.

I had about 80 ducks fly overhead, all but 2 of which were woodies. A doe also walked in to about 10 yards and spooked when she saw me move. Another turkey hunter stopped by and offered to turn back. I told him to go on ahead knowing he might push birds back towards me. He was nice and told me what he knew about where the turkeys were roosting, loafing, and feeding. I’ll give it another 45 mins or so, then see if I can jump the ducks based on where they were flying. No waders today so if I get a duck I get to swim and be my own retriever. 36 degrees and snowing, brr! ❄️

Outmaneuvered by upland fowl and waterfowl. I peaked over the edge of the weed row before picking up my decoy and 7 turkeys and I saw each other at the same time. 65 yards standing, but there were in a clump and I’m only good to 45 anyways.

Found 12 woodies and crawled in for an ambush but I could not find them again when I got to the water’s edge. I finally gave up and stood up only to find they had all swam about 50 yards away, at which point I was busted 😅

I am repositioned to try and intercept the does. They are not crossing the creek bottom where my blind is (top of red line)

but instead jumping the fence about 30-80 yards up hill. I’m hunting from the ground 60 yards up the hill in front of an oak to avoid being skylined with some thin grass in front to break up my outline.

I’ve got wind in my face and good thermals. With any luck I’ll have one walk into my set up here in about 90 mins

15 yard recovery. Liver hit, but she was unable to scramble out of the ravine bottom. I ended her life with my knife in short order. Lots of mud and blood - no tasteful photos.

Meat will be hanging tonight and then I’ll process it tomorrow after work. I love fresh venison!!
