Diners, Gas Stations, Truck Stops, and Dives

I can't drive through South East Kansas without stopping at one of the fried chicken restaurants. Chicken Mary's, Chicken Annie's, Barto's - take your pick and you're in for a great meal. However, not a fan of Pichler's Chicken Annie's (yes, there are multiple Chicken Annie's) over by the casino.

That's why you go to Little Montana in Grass Range. The only thing Bohemian has is over priced jerky.....
That's 30 miles down the road though and I may or may not have that much gas left when I get back out to the highway.

Once upon a time there was one lonesome bar in my tiny hometown located at the end of the paved road. Sixty years or more ago a college friend had come up quail hunting during thanksgiving vacation. We dropped in the bar my dad ordered bourbon and water and i ordered bourbon and seven. My friend ordered a Beefeater martini shaken, not stirred. The ancient bartender/owner without a word unsteadily poured my father and I drinks then looked at my friend and said, “ if you have what they are having its on the house”. A few years later the saloon burned to the ground, never to be replaced. You now have to drive fifty miles to buy a bottle of whiskey.

I just drove by Bill's Place in Reserve today. Oldest bar in these parts, in a village from 1500.
Been in there a few times over the years. Good place to get stink eye for ordering coffee.

Pretty sure I've been there too. Pretty cool place inside. What I would give to draw a tag and visit the area again.

Does the Oxford still make brains and eggs? mtmuley
They don't actually serve it, but it is still on the menu. We treated ourselves this morning..he had the breakfast and I had the 'dinner'..comes with Texas Toast and fries. I'm obviously working on keeping it healthy in prep for hunting season. 🤦🏼‍♀️

That reminds me of a very good dive right across the street...Dinosaur Cafe in Charlie B's. What a wonderfully odd bar; unless it's changed, about 100 framed photos of random dudes from the '70's is essentially the only decor.

I hope the food was better than their menu design.

Oh yeah, Charlie's is still rockin. The photos are still there..they are a collection of all the regulars. They actually did a new collection in the last couple years, some folks are up there twice cuz they're still kickin. Friday's clam chowder is the best in Missoula and the Cajun food is awesome.

Just out of curiosity, does Joe's Smoke Ring still exist in Arlee?
We used to stop there all the time when I was a kid, but the shocking lack of any proof of existence in google leads me to believe the whole thing may have been a figment of my imagination...
Does not exist. Dozed it a few years ago and put in a big ole casino. Haven't been in there since. It's called Grey Wolf Peak.

Another story centered around the old bar in my hometown. It loooked like it came out of an old west TV show, instead of bat winged doors it had an old screen door for air conditioning. You sort of expected to see Miss Kitty from Gunsmoke to appear from the back. It was conveniently located next to a corrugated shed housing the volunteer fire truck. One night we were sitting around the potbellied stove in my folks home when the fire siren went off a couple miles away in town. We leaped in dads battered old pickup and went to town for instructions. The fire was several miles even farther, a barn was aflame with men scurrying around to no avail. Afterward with the fire truck put away the old saloon owner always opened up and everyone went in for a libation. The same college friend was visiting and he was excited and agonizing over what we might have done to save the structure. An old rancher who looked like Walter Brennen told him not to take it so hard because we hardly ever saved anything on fire but, “it was a chance to have a drink with our friends. “

Alright y’all sucked me in, Me Oh My Coffee and Pie in Laporte Colorado. High performance fuel right there. I highly recommend the biscuits and gravy!
