Diners, Gas Stations, Truck Stops, and Dives

Hardwood smokehouse in Red Lodge. Once you get over the service the food is totally worth it.

Just out of curiosity, does Joe's Smoke Ring still exist in Arlee?
We used to stop there all the time when I was a kid, but the shocking lack of any proof of existence in google leads me to believe the whole thing may have been a figment of my imagination...
It wasn't in Arlee, right at the top of Evaro Hill before you get to Arlee.

Its still there, might be called something different now.

In the Gap restaurant in Judith Gap MT. It’s a crap shoot as far as when it’s open, but the breakfast is pretty good. The Moore Bar in Moore MT is also a favorite little stop off. Always meet some interesting folks in there and the burgers are pretty decent.

Not sure if it's still there, but the Star Hotel in Elko, NV has the best steak sandwich on the planet. It's a Basque place, there are several others across northern NV. If you ever travel that way you have to find and Basque food.

Starvin Arvins in Grand Junction and a couple other nearby towns has awesome breakfasts. Famous biscuits, green chile, you can't go wrong with any of it.

I go a little crazy when I travel to NM, there are countless fantastic food places. Probably my favorite is in Taos, the Ranchos Plaza Grill has the most amazing red chile. Barelas Coffee House in ABQ is equally awesome.

Also for breakfasts, Hash House A Go-Go in Vegas is something everyone should try once. If you know, you know.

Star hotel is awesome...

For when y'all are on summer vacation:

Crackers, Crystal River Fl. Gator tail is right, place is on the water, beer is cold
Pi on Broadway, Ocala Fl. Wide beer selection and wood fired pizza
Breakfast would be a Cracker barrel anywhere
The Yearling in Cross Creek Fl. only open Thursday through Sunday, make reservations. High end cracker food
It warms my heart to know people on hear know of the yearling

Baker's Ribs on I-20 in Canton, Tx
Medicine Mound Depot Cafe in Quanah, Tx
Pantry Cafe in Santa Fe, NM
The pantry in Santa Fe! I grew up eating there with my pops. Huevos rancheros, three eggs over easy, Christmas. Make that order. You’re welcome ;)

My six year old self LOVED being the first one in the door at opening time at the Village Inn in Laramie to get breakfast with my dad. “Pigs in a blanket” with exotic syrups will never lose their appeal.

Hotel Wolf in Saratoga Wyoming serves an amazing burger……somehow the beef stays piping hot and the lettuce/tomato remains crisp and cold until the last bite.

The Oasis in Colby Kansas is a super place to stop for gas, made to order faster food, Baskin Robbins ice cream, and it even has a Starbucks to sip while your dog does his business in the animal park. The iron palm trees that can be seen from I-70 always give me a chuckle as we pull in to the lot.

I am a bit surprised to miss anyone mentioning Buckee’s travel shop (Texas and heading towards Oklahoma). I’ve never seen so many gas pumps in one location, or seen so much munchie junk food/made to order fast food/gift shop/house decor/sporting goods.

- Seabeck Pizza in Broadus, MT
- I prefer The Den over Sparky's in Dillon
- Sandford's Pub and Grub in Sheridan, WY
- Hotel Wolf in Saratoga, WY (not sure how good the food is there, but every time I have gone it has been still cold/wet from the mountain, and it sure tasted good then...)
- There are alot of other good little spots, but they are too close to trailheads...;)

I will throw this in, but it is a little sporting goods shop, not a food place. Any time I go through Buffalo, WY I have to stop at The Sports Lure. It is awesome.

Love The Star. The lobster is incredible but expensive. Toki Ono has a great steak sandwich too in Elko

Who else remembers " Belisle's in Orange County, Calif. Now that was a breakfast !!!

At one time, one could eat and drink their way across America on Route 66. Nobody drives 66 anymore and many have closed. Those that still exits, like Sultana,s in Arizona have gotten a bit "commercialized", but still worth a visit.

In Arizona, the Cowboy Club still serves good Elk, Buffalo, Rattlesnake and beef dinners and I like the Prickly Pear Margaritas . I still feel the Phantom Ranch Canteen is worth a visit.

Whenever in Australia, I would whine until my husband took me up to Silky Oak Treehouse lodge and restaurant, just north of Cairns . Eating kangaroo and crocodile in a treehouse where the jungle meets the barrier reef. Loved it !

We flew from Namibia to Victoria Falls Hotel to attend a party that I will never forget. We dressed like they did at the turn of the century--1900, not 2000--(-;--
and had dinner and cocktails on the veranda while watching the game come to the river in the evening. Only wild Africa game was served and it was served in a way where you could take one or two bite size pieces of several animals. 50 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday.

Another Africa trip we took, just for the restaurant and/or experience. We flew to Zanzibar and had dinner at the Rock restaurant . The entire rock/island is one building---a restaurant. They had a dish called "Knocking on Heavens door, that our cheese lovers here would enjoy. We had octopus, cign, lobster, king pawns-----(-: ---definitely worth a visit if your in the area.

John Cushman : If you ever go on an Ibex hunt in Spain, take a side trip to The Canary Islands and visit the Bodegas Monje Vineyards. Possibly the only vineyards in the world that offers Sex shows while dining and wine tasting, at their vineyards ;)

Before I check out, I still hope to visit one more winery. Location: Almost North Dakota, Not quite Canada.
