Did I blow out the bear?

Vortex branded Seekins rings torqued down to spec. can be more than a Leupold scope tube can stand. I don't know about other Vortex rings.

Christensen's 20 moa rail, Vortex rings, and Leupold VX 6 3-18x44 scope. I run Talley rings on some of my other guns. The other scopes are Leupold VX 3 4.5-14x40
At the risk of getting flamed on this forum I would send that Leupold back and see what the results are. I’m willing to bet it doesn’t have a clean bill of health. I’ve had numerous Leupolds that needed “fixing”. For a dialing scope I prefer other brands.
Which Vortex rings? Did you lap them?

Did you make sure the Front screw holding the rail down wasn’t to long and hitting the barrel threads? Very common problem.

Switched to the 7mm and ended up harvesting a chocolate boar Saturday night at 350 yards. He was about 1,000 yards from the first bear. Maybe the miss before was my fault. Maybe it was the gun. Maybe it was the scope, rings, or base. But I trust that 7mm and it delivered beautifully. Appreciate everyone's input.

You have to have pictures if you “claim” to have taken a bear. 😀

At first you questioned your brand new gun and I'm just going to say it, but if you not familiar enough with the whole setup to know, you probably shouldn't be taking 500 yard shots. More range time with the gun before taking those shots.
