Deer - lets see em

I got out this morning during the last of this snow storm and was treated to an amazing time out. There was so much snow stuck to the trees that sounds were muffled, trees were tipping, and this buck was up looking for a place to shack up for the day. I still hunted through some thick stuff and made a perfect 100 yd shot in a clearing. He's not necessarily a buck of a lifetime, but I'm damn proud of him and couldn't have asked for a more beautiful morning to be out.

Shot him Sunday morning before church. I was really on the fence from the picture I got of him a few weeks prior. I really needed to work M-W instead of hunt, and my wife wants one too, so after Thanksgiving I would have three days for us to get our deer. There were other hunters too so no promises that he’d survive till after Thanksgiving. Saturday morning I had planned to pass on him, but I never saw him Saturday. I decided Saturday night that if I could get a shot on him that I would take it. He looked better than I thought when I saw him Sunday morning. He looked even better after I shot him. He’s deceptive. He’s the biggest bodied deer I’ve shot. When I took the head in to get a CWD sample the biologist said he was 8.5yrs old. That made me even happier with him! He’s not the biggest I’ve killed, but he’s the oldest! I’m looking forward to butchering him and getting a weight on boneless meat.

Wife got her deer yesterday at 226yds in a 25mph wind. First mule deer! I asked if she got excited and she said “not really, when they started moving out I figured ‘I guess I’m gonna have to shoot him while he’s walkin’” I swear she has ice her veins.

My brothers rifle season buck on the family farm. Dad Watched him bed down in some cat tails, I got him to stand up with the grunt tube and my brother took the shot. It was a tough recovery in shin deep mud in a cat tail slough but another great memory and another great season.
