Deer - lets see em

Man, I've gotta get up to Montana. I have a friend who lives in De Borgia, looks like it's time to pay him a visit.

Got this guy this morning. Over 20” wide but a short tined 10. He has lots of character and lots of meat.
I’m glad I had a buddy here to help me drag him otherwise I was going to quarter him up where he laid as it was all uphill to the road.

how I found him down in a draw.

Thanks man. It’s actually the rifle my friend lent me months ago to practice with and take on my first western hunt to Colorado a couple weeks ago. He wanted me to hunt with it this morning, so I did.
I can say the 147gr ELD’s in 6.5 cause a lot of damage. I couldn’t salvage the heart and the lungs were jelly. I lost more meat than I would have liked despite shooting behind the shoulders.

Unfortunately I think that's a characteristic of the ELDs... I took a good sized WY muley quartering away slightly at relatively short range with a .308 loaded with 168gr VLDs. The result was just about the same... practically liquefied the heart and lungs, completely destroyed the opposite shoulder and left an enormous exit hole.

Yeah I don’t think I’ll use them out of my own 6.5 now. In fact for my little Texas whitetail I’m thinking about switching back to my 223 and 243.

Got my first deer ever yesterday morning with that doe. Stayed in the stand and shot my first buck an hour later when I rattled him in. Broke both G4s fighting. It was an awesome day here in Tennessee.
