Dart Ya A Big Un!

Thanks to DRAFTSTUD for mailing me the flyer. I opened it up and saw the dart deal, a 2 day capture expedition and the 5 day, free range elk hunt, both at the Flying Z in west Texas. I thought one was a hunt, the 5 day one and one was a dart deal, the 2 day capture expedition. It seems ok to me, RMEF does a lot of elk capture stuff.

Why would you have to spend 5 days to Dart an Elk on a ranch?

Dear Diary,

Day one:

We got to the ranch and it looked lovely, the sun was shining and the armadillos were crossing the driveway just like the brochure said it would. We walked up to the cabin and there were pictures of big bulls and ostriches everywhere. I’m sure I will get a chance to shoot a bit Bull and take my picture with it in the next 5 days.

We were going to go a field today but we stayed back at the ranch drinking. Down here in Texas it seems like most of the “fellar’s” just sit around Drinking until it’s time to add more carrots to the feeders. Then they hop in their “rig’s” and “Git er done”. So it’s evening time now and we haven’t darted us anything.

Day two:

I got up early. I’m used to sitting in a tree stand all day back home so I got up 2 hours before daylight to start the hunt. The guides were just going to bed and said they’d be up soon so I’m just going to watch some TV. All that’s on is HEE HAW. It’s kind of a Silly show but I should be out hunting later.

(Later that evening) The guides got up around 2PM and called some Hispanic looking gal over and we ate some Lunch beans. It sure seemed like the Dinner we had yesterday but they said something about it being fresh off the “Grittle”. One guy had so much Chew in I couldn’t understand him but that was OK, he seemed friendly enough. We didn’t get out today hunting but when it came dark time they said something about “Tendin’ the sheep” and took off with Velcro Chaps and gloves. I was left here to get a Good nights sleep for tomorrows hunt.

Day three:

Those dang mosquitoes kept me up last night. They sound like planes flying over head. And I’m not sure what kind of bugs they have down here buy I tell yaw hut, they sound like army men tramping across the floor at night too. I thought I had an Extra pair of boots but I think the bugs hauled them off during the night. Weird I tell ya….. Today was more of the same. I did get to go out and tend the goats and hogs they had. There were a Couple sheep running around inside and wool all over the bedspreads and such. I guess they sheared some of the Sheep and the tequila bottles lying all around could get someone hurt if they tripped over them. Although droggy, the guides sure seemed in good spirits. That being said I spent the Day outside in a tire swing.

Day four:

I almost made it out today. We got in the Truck and then drove to the back 20 Acres were they keep the 9 elk but one of the ranch hands forgot the key to the gate. We went back to the Ranch house and they sat around talking about Politics and religion and who has a Bigger Deck. I was pretty worn out but hopefully tomorrow brings more Excitement too.

Day five:

Today was great we drove to the Back 20 Acres of the 200,000 Acre ranch and I got to dart the Elk of my dreams!!! Well, technically I didn’t dart it. There was a Texas Windstorm last night and a Tree fell over on this elk and I just got to sit next to it and take a Picture. The Best thing of all was with the tree down in the Background you couldn’t see the Fence. ALL in ALL it was a Great 5 day hunt and I can’t wait to get back to Mississippi and post my story on the Internet!!!!!

I did read.... My bad for not reading all the way though.

Tom, we should go on that hunt to rack up some Points for our team, those other guys have no chance !!!!

Maybe Greenhorn will go, he likes hiking around and elk hunting with you. Did he post in this thread yet? Was it the Flying Z that had the 454 elk? He might like that too?
