I did this one on audiobook while I was chasing archery elk this year. Link.

Good:
-Finally get some contemporary accounts of a famous mountain man.
-Details help you pinpoint locations in the west you can go to, or have been and fill out the story.
-Gives you insight into the mountain man lifestyle and the rendezvous that you don't get anywhere else.
-Mountain man names make you want your own, but not earn it like some did.
-Historical account that really makes you think of the times.

Bad:
-Audio book can be hard to understand at times and the reader didn't do homework on pronunciation. But if you read the book, won't matter.
-New scholarship wants to refute if he actually ate liver, but his peers all claim to see him do it.
-Written long ago, so can be hard to follow at times.
-The ending is anticlimatic, wish more could be added.

I read the book many years. Didn't know at the time is was what Jerimiah Johnson Movie was based on. Didn't take long to figure that one out though

My son loved it. Did a book report and several teachers borrowed it to read once they knew it was the basis of the movie.

It's been on my "to read" list for a while. Working on "Blood and Thunder" right now about Navajo, Kit Carson and New Mexico. It is a good read so far.
