Coyote hunting over turkey decoys?

I hunt coyotes for predator management in multiple areas. A couple spots are loaded with turkeys and the coyotes definitely hunt them heavily.

Has anyone ever tried setting up decoys and mimicking a flock and a wounded turkey. Scratching? Wings? Calls?

I like trying weird shit. No Jason, not that. 😂

I think you’d want something with movement, like a thrashing, injured bird. Maybe attach a wing to Mojo or some such?

I dusted a young coyote circling around a behind a flock in Kansas last year. Herter’s TSS out of my 20gauge SBEIII was very effective, not even a quiver.

I have a spinning decoy… I think I’ll attach some wing to it and see what happens! Great idea!!

I love hunting coyotes. I love hunting anything. In this case I love calling and such. I actually love trying new stuff. Better in the field than on the couch.
Absolutely right. I bet it would work in the right situation.

Last coyote I shot at, i brought a turkey decoy and tried some messed up calling🤣 I bet there wasn’t a real turkey for 5 miles. He came right in. By time I seen him he had me spotted and I took a running-away shot at him.

It will work with the right terrain.

I've shot a couple coyotes while turkey hunting, but never drug turkey decoys out specifically for yotes.

Not to get too sidetracked, but our wonderful anti-hunting leaders here in Michigan have closed coyote season during spring turkey hunting. Californians are now saying, "Don't turn our state into Michigan!" SMDH.

I hunted a new piece of private land I gained access to this leftover season in Central Kansas. I found no less than 4 fresh dens and tracks on the heels of any deer sign. Curious to know how well this works. I will be on the hunt to clear the yotes out of the area in preparation for regular season this fall.

Study up. It will take a concerted effort that is strategic and measured. You can’t bomb in and go full Terminator. You’ll just educate them.

Get the book “The Last Stand.” Read up and take notes. Research the period you’re going to hunt. Hunt carefully, and don’t sling lead. Don’t hunt for another month. The goal is to kill what you see and again don’t educate them. You want to pressure them, but have them not get to damn smart.

You have to stay dedicated. It improves your hunting and you learn a ton. Feel free to pm me.

I have had a lot of coyotes come in to turkey calling. I used to get up set because I felt the coyotes were ruining my turkey hunts, but now I have decided I need to be on the lookout so I can shoot the coyote before it busts me.

As of yet, I have never been successful shooting a coyote, but I have had some incredible encounters with coyotes popping up 10 yards from me. Sadly, they were on my weak side and the movement needed to bring a weapon around was too much and they busted out. quite an adrenaline rush though.

Awesome. I'll check that book out. I'm certainly not a lead slinger so no worries there. :) One shot one kill. Usually with a bow. But I'll carry a .30-06 if the occasion arises. This is one of the few places I can hunt with a rifle. Been thinking about grabbing the old .30-30 or .243 from my Dad for this pred hunt. He also has a sweet .270 that's a vintage R700 I want to get my hands on. I know you want to use a cost effective round cause they may be plentyful. But I just want to use something easy to carry and a bit quicker on the reload. Not that my M17 isn't a smooth bolt. The rounds I'm willing to send through it aren't the cheapest. I could also get my hands on an old .30-06 woodsmaster (model just prior to the jam-o-matic). But semi-auto tends to be an excuse to sling lead and per your advice and my exisitng tendencies, I'm not a fan of the spray and pray. Photo's are from the two evenings I walked the property looking for deer sign. So I didn't waste anymore season time on that property. I didn't see any of the wild dogs out even just after dark. It was a couple of the coldest days though so I imagine fat on poultry they dug in. The bird carcass had been visited between my 2 field walks (Tues. then Thurs.).
