Colorado Question

I have a question for the Colorado experts. I have hunted there before where all members of our group had tags. Hypothetically, if I get a tag in the draw and my hunting partner wants to come and assist, can he do that without also having a tag? If so, what exactly can he legally help with?

He can help with pretty much anything except squeezing the trigger. He cannot carry a rifle that meets the requirement for hunting big game, or he could be cited for hunting without a license.

He can doing everything legal to assist you in your hunt except carry a weapon. And abide by all the standard CPW hunting rules and regulations.

Not technically true. He cannot carry a weapon with intent to harvest an animal for which he cannot legally do so.

He can carry a rifle all he wants and doesn't need to abide by an law different than any other citizen going for a hike. The officer would need to prove his intent was to use it for hunting.

For your question, like oak said your buddy can do pretty much everything except pull the trigger on the animal or separate from you with the intent of him hunting with a weapon.

King, no disrespect intended to you or the folks who responded, but why would you seek law clarification questions on an open forum ? I suggest that you contact the Law Enforcement Division of the Colorado Fish and Game Department.

I will be doing that as well, simply inquiring of those who have experience.

Seeth isn’t wrong imo. But I do more often than not prefer the above reproach approach. Plus carrying a rifle while not holding a tag is just a waste of energy.

He can do anything, he just can't shoot at an elk. I'd have him bring a subsonic 22 so he can be on grouse duty.

There is one other thing he can't do and it can get into a grey area super quick. He cannot help in any way on your hunt and be compensated in any way. That is unless he gets licensed by the state as an outiftter or big game guide.

There are many scenarios where this gets iffy real quick. Ie giving him half your meat if your successful

Big game has a .24 caliber minimum requirement. So if he chooses to carry something smaller with a small game license, that helps his case that he is not hunting deer or elk. Any long rifle in a bigger caliber could lead to a difficult conversation with some CPW officers explaining his intent.

Saw some 4 guys out hunting in Colorado, only 2 had tags. The other two ended up with $1500 tickets. They were all carrying bows though. Hard to explain that one to the warden!

It wouldn't be hard to explain if they had small game tips. And I doubt there is any requirement for specific broadhead to shoot grouse.
I almost packed mine along on my sons muzzy hunt to shoot grouse, but decided to focus on elk and not mess with the grouse(until the last day when I got one with pistol).

It wouldn't be hard to explain if they had small game tips. And I doubt there is any requirement for specific broadhead to shoot grouse.

My wife on my NM archery elk hunt was carrying her bow. She got one grouse and missed two. She did just have guillotine turkey broadheads so it would have been easy to explain to the warden with her valid hunting license but so what if she did have a traditional solid broadhead

True but based on their truck they had driven 20 hours to get there, but I see where you are coming from
