Hey all, looking for some advice on fourth season rifle for elk in 181. My college buddy and I are first timers in the elk woods and have been looking all over the internet trying to narrow down an area to start with. We both been combing over google earth and onyx maps. Just looking for some help like the northern end is better or the southern. Looks like in 4th season it really depends on the snow up high and looks like the more northern part of the unit is a lot more rugged. Any insight or advice is appreciated, we both have cow tags looking to fill a freezer.

There are countless drive by posts on this site asking for where to find animals. If you're unlucky, and someone does respond and tell you what to do, you're going to miss out on a rewarding experience of putting together a plan of your own and trying to make it work. Check out Randy Newberg's videos on the 5 seasons of elk hunting, e scouting, and podcast on cow elk hunting, and you should have enough of an where to start. Be sure to utilize CP&W interactive map as well for migration routes and animal concentrations. Good luck.

CP&W hunt atlas & a high perch to glass. If that doesn't work after a few days, call the game warden & find out where the outfitters are camped.

Welcome to the forum. The more active you are here, the more cooperation you will enjoy. As you may have surmised, one-post wonders are overabundant here and regarded lightly. This is not discourtesy. Rather, a learned response from sharing hard-earned intel w posters who vanish without adding value. That often leads to good hunting spots becoming popular spots. Lose-lose.

CPW will put you in touch w the DWM (warden) and the biologist responsible for that unit. Do not underestimate the utility of the Big Game Atlas: https://ndismaps.nrel.colostate.edu/index.html?app=HuntingAtlas
Example: I have never hunted or scouted the unit, but a brief look @ the Atlas shows a large roadless area of good elk habitat on public lands between and north of roads 103.2A and 104.1.

Good luck this fall. Let us know how your hunt went.

I’m a member of multiple forums, been following this one for a few years. I expected the above suggestions and have already referenced them thoroughly (had not heard of Newbergs podcast, I’ll be sure to check it out) I understand completely the “drive by” but this being my first trip out west I don’t have much in the way of inputs for others. We have a plan in place, just looking for validation from someone who has actually been in the unit, even if we don’t see any elk I’ll take a 5 day camping trip in the mountains over the office any day! Sincerity can be lost through text, but I really do appreciate all inputs!
