GOHUNT - Filter and find hunts like never before

Catron Co.,NM declares state of emergency...wolves.

They mention many sightings near kids & ranches & homes. Pets attacked.

I think the op's point is not wolf/human interaction but the affect the wolves are having on ranchers/farmers & hunters

My comment referred to this portion. Human encroachment into their territory though i do understand after reading "wolves". Even though no mention of the Mexican wolves, I should have put it together, knowing NM has the smaller version of wolves.
Apologies. Sleepy at the time? IDK. Haha!

Thanks BHR. I forgot the time.
Catron county is the largest , least populated in state. 7500 sq. mi. , maybe 5k people now. Boomed after covid.
2800 when I moved here in 2009.

Cattle and hunting are the only income really. A small number visit the forest & wilderness.
My porch & barn are from the last mill. Gone now.
The Pie shop. A few cafes. Ella's in Reverse is good. Maybe 4 motels.
I can probably name 3 ranchers who do not run hunts or guide.

I am pretty much hated for my pro wildlife stance. I do not run cattle anymore. A money pit or tax write off if you ask me.
Same with being in E-plus. From HT for sure.
Local ranchers say they like the elk coming here...not them being here.
Got an earful when I told one gal I am planting trees & plants for wildlife.
Using my water for them? How dare I. Water is for cattle.

I just need to teach Dotti about CYA. Stick to the house area. She is hip to the yotes now, but not the bigger badder beasts.
Need to get the plants in and get my elk tags so we can use one and maybe someone else.
I will not sell them. It screws up my income level that has to stay where it is . Otherwise one of the cancer pills is not free and $3300/mo.
Native elk wiped out before the ranchers. Merriams.
These Rockies are thriving now. Cool.

This little storm will be interesting.
I'm about to hit 70 and enjoying my life. Screw the cancer.
Not afraid of a little wolf. Hope they don't bring back grizz here.

It's the 2 legged beast that concern me.

You are a bit of a rebel, Hank. I'm sure the locals tolerate you better than most!

Note edit w current map.

During the planning of CO wolf reintro much was made about keeping northern gray wolves in CO far from the southern border so they will not compete with or hybridize the protected Mexican grays in NM. Not aware that plan has changed. Here is the lates wolf watershed distribution map from CPW.

Free range cattle and losses. Full grown & calves.
I noticed that when I was there. Cattle in the middle of the wilderness wandering around, the same places I saw the wolves. Are the cattle free range during calving seasons? If so, my give-a-shit meter drops dramatically. Saw lots of bear sign and i'm sure lions are a problem too. Doubt they get payments if losses are from those.

Do you really think they free range cattle in the calving season?

I've seen over a dozen lobos the last two years. When they saw me, they hauled a$$. Except for the 4 that walked underneath my tree stand. They had no clue. I'm not concerned about attacks on humans. Pets and livestock, yes they occur. Side note: A. McQueen Catron County Commissioner (dislikes the lobos) I wonder if she's related to M. McQueen (NM state rep from SF county) he hates hunting/trapping.

Neighbor runs a donkey with their cows. Seems to be effective.

Here's a link on Ella. The wolf people down south are a whole nother level of crazy.

You need to make a visit to Reserve. The crazy teeter totter is well balanced. I'm sure the ranchers hate wolves but love the payments and low grazing fees on NF lands. It's a conundrum. NM will probably increase the NR elk license to make the reimbursement pool larger. LOL

Think I'll stick to hunting Montana and Wyoming, were wolves are already delisted. You want to see shit your pants crazy? Wait till we get grizzlies delisted!

Can always count of those folks for a bullshit statement on this stuff. Think they'll get some donations out of it?

Probably not.😁

I have tried to edjumacate myself. Sorry mom.
NM is open range.

Don't hit a cow or elk. With the truck. Check.
Check your fence lines. Close the gates. Check.
Do not believe anything you hear outright, verify. Check.
Not all green chile is mild. Double check.

Calving season is when calves are born. Whenever.
Oh, OK. Huh? ( overheard a rancher telling how he lost 4 calves ...in Jan.) No snow. Just damn cold.

FS announces plans to shoot feral cattle in the wilderness. Not my lease they say, not my cattle and show outrage at the idea. Nixed.

Debating going to the meeting now.
Ella's will be packed ,so no breakie.
I have about worn out my tv mute as it is...

No AG exemption so I have paid my taxes in full. But I get points in elk enhancement.
I do not need to hear whiners who only pay 5% of the bill and whine all year about the Feds as the pay discount graizing fees and will really whine when the Feds no longer send $ for schools.
But they will have a new PU from the cattle write off...from the Feds.

Catron county. Nice place.
Named for the most corrupt Senator in state history and a ringleader of the "Cattle Wars" that made ole Billy famous. And never lived here.
They waited for the Buffalo Soldiers to clear out the Apache. Then ran out or killed the same from their homesteads.

Oh well. I have Dotti sleeping by my side. Nice little fire going.
Had a hundred or so elk here yesterday morn.
Maybe the wind will not hit 60 today.
Maybe I can plant the chokecherries and narrowleaf cottonwoods next week.
Snow maybe this weekend.

Not worried about wolves.
Life is good.
