Cabelas and Bass pro shop merger always did stink.

Why do we need more laws? Do we really need to complicate the idea of "Thou shalt not steal"?

When NASCAR started, the rule book said something to the effect of "Stock Lift shall be maintained on the camshaft" and guys like Smokey Yunick would change the ratio of the rocker arms to get that lift they could no longer get by manipulating the cam... Then they started playing with duration of the cam. The intent was to race "stock" cars, but someone always finds a way to manipulate the rules.

In my previous post, I talked about people manipulating the market with false information in order to drive stock prices in a direction they wanted. Do we need more laws? Probably. Do we need less of the laws we have? Probably. We need well thought out legislation...... or really what we need is for people to try to make their money without taking advantage of their fellow man, but since that won't happen, we need well thought out laws to keep the playing field level for everyone, especially the little guy.

Because we know that unbridled capitalism gives us this:

regulation of industry is a good thing. It keeps industry more honest than if they had unfettered hands to do whatever. We've gone backwards now, so that large corporations & billionaires pay less in taxes that the middle and lower classes. We've shifted their burden on to our backs so that billionaires can buy a fourth island or a third jet.

Capitalism is a fine and good thing in theory. It has the capacity to lift all to better living standards. Well regulated capitalism that keeps the playing field level lifts small business owners & entrepreneurs up, while maintaining that level field against the people who would buy & sell you to increase their net worth by a buck.

Our history is full of the rapacious greed of wealthy men who sought to reduce their burden while increasing everyone elses. If we do not remember our history, we're doomed to be enslaved by it.

To an extent, we need regulation. We need balance though. It can be cumbersome and too restrictive.

As far as the greedy men, it doesn't mater what form of economy or government you have, they are always there, always looking for an advantage, never satiated.

Totally agree. How we regulate is critical to ensuring true economic freedom. Right now, we're doing it poorly and neither party wants to give up their mega-donor money to stand up for the average citizen or main-street business owner.

I think we have gone way too far in the laissez faire direction, our Gini index is soaring.

We need to bring back regs like glass steagall.

The removal of the Smith-Mundt Act, Glass-Steagall, etc. The creation of the Telecommunications Act.

Once the Bush crime family had its hooks in, any protections to the consumers were targeted. It didn't matter the sitting president, they were going to carry out the wishes of this family. To me, that's why the current anomaly is so interesting.

I agree. Used to be a fella could work his job and support his family, buying a car or two and a house. The buying power of Average Joe American is not what it used to be. We've maintained our standard of living over the last several decades by increasing the number of earners in the household, buying from China and other low cost places of manufacture and through longer terms on debt.

BTW, I had to look up Gini Ratio. I'm not really all that smart with financial stuff.

the Bush crime family

My uncle is the only person I've ever heard us that term lol... I thought he had coined it...

Glass–Steagall was Clinton, both parties are equally responsible for our current system.

100%, I certainly don't want socialism, I just want hard working folks to be able to make ends meet and be able to put away a little away for the future.

Throw in the modern slavery act as well, they were all working for poppy Bush. (The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act)

I find myself purchasing most of my hunting equipment anymore from small companies like Mystery Ranch, Kenetrek, Stone Glacier, ect...knowing full well that much of their products are expensive and made overseas. They strongly support wildlife orgs I support, and as one individual consumer, that's the leverage I have. Can't really control what other people do and don't care to waste my time trying.

If you want "control" of your business, don't go public. Obviously the brothers didn't care.

My issue is how many tax breaks, sweetheart deals, etc did Sydney give Cabelas over the years because of all the jobs, then boom, look who gets hit.

Cities should attatch language wherein when/if ownership changes, all tax breaks revert.

On deals like this, the taxpayer takes it in the shorts on the build up of a business, and it's fall.

Obama's "you didn't build that" was easy to criticize, but the truth is the folks around Sydney did help build that, and they got burned by Cabelas and a corporate raider.

Thry didn't build that, but they sure did lose it.

Me too! I find the smaller companies have better customer service, better products, and do a lot for wildlife conservation.
