Building a new rifle verses buying

Well it’s finally home. I would like to introduce you to a Remington 700 chambered in .450 Bushmaster. It ended up with a Shilen Stainless match grade barrel, blue printed action, B&C M40 stock, Timney trigger, and a larger bolt handle. She is currently sporting a old 2x7 Nikon Prostaff I had saved for another 10/22 build that never happened. Future plans are a VX3 3x9x40. It is going to get some range time this weekend.

So far this is not the gun I had in my mind when it was dreamt up but it turned into a project that exceeded my expectations. The gun smith did a heck of a job and stayed true to his word on his quote.

Couldn’t wait till tomorrow, he’ll with the neighbors. I ran some test rounds thru it. Here a 3 shot group with 240g XTP Mags. Not to shabby for a novice hand loader and just loading to factory dimensions.

If it were me, I'd go with a lower end Savage with Accutrigger on the used market. I did this when I built my Long Range .243. I paid $300 for the rifle with a cheap tasco scope and added a B&C Medalist, McGowan Barrel, and Vortex Viper scope. All in all it was under $1500 for the bought the parts in stages and built it. For a .450 BM, I would go the same route but keep the weight to 8 pounds with scope. 18-22" barrel, sporter stock and a low power scope.

Got another Gold Ring today. I added a 3x9 Leupold Freedom ultimate slam muzzleloader to it today. The reticle is supposed to match up to the .450’s ballistics pretty well. Time to put some rounds down range and see how it shoots.

How is the quality of that freedom scope? I haven't had hands on one yet.

It is definitely not a VX3i, the finish seems not as good of quality. The MOA turrets adjustments are not as smooth as I’ve had in the past with my VX2. But the quality of the image was very crisp and the retical was nice. All in all it is a good scope for the price point. I had it mounted in about 20 min and with 10 shots I was able to pull off this 5 shot group at 100.

Something I don't get here. Building a 450 Bush master to use in a Mich shotgun zone? How's that work?

We had a law change a few years ago where they allow a straight wall cartridge with a case length up to 1.8” long. The .450 is only 1.7” long and has found a huge following here. It cost way less to shoot and has proven superior in almost every way.
