Bozeman Crowd Please Avoid Map Brewery

I don't know if it's at all the same kind of situation going on here, but it reminds me of a place I visited here in Chicago called Sportsman's Club. It's got mounts all over the walls, brick, lots of wood. This Yelp review from another confused patron says it all:

"As an experienced hunter I was thrilled to learn of Sportman's Club in Chicago. A place where I could gather with fellow hunters and fisherman to share our recent adventures. From the moment I walked in I felt at home with a hunting theme running from floor to ceiling. I looked around and saw plenty of flannel. Plenty of beards.

I pulled up a seat at the bar and started regaling the patrons with my recent bear hunting trip to the Upper Peninsula. I told them about a wonderful fishing expedition to Canada and some issues we ran into with Customs upon our return home. I was looking for the other Sportsman's Club patrons to share their similar stories but received none. Perhaps they were just shy? I prodded for more information but none could relate. They looked at me like I was crazy. Imagine that? An actual Outdoorsman being viewed as crazy for dining in an outdoorsman themed establishment by a bunch of city dwelling, hand sanitizer using twerps that have never taken down a full grown male moose charging them from 100 yards away.

I could only take so much. As a respected hunter and fisherman I needn't spend another second in such an inauthentic establishment. There is no difference between what Sportsman's Club is attempting to do versus what someplace like Rainforest Cafe is trying to do - essentially build a fake atmosphere for their patrons - 90% of whom will never actually partake in the real life activity.

You know who has a more authentic environment with just as good of beer and food? TGI Fridays. Go there instead."

Some places are all about the vibe and not the genuine appeal.

Hello wllm1313,
We are a new brewery that opened October 25 (Opening weekend of General Season) of 2015. During the last 5 months we have grown quickly and have become known for great beers, great atmosphere, and great service. We, as a company are not anti-trapping, we do not have a dog in the fight. We are comprised of hunters, fishermen, bikers, and skiers. The euro mounts that you see in the tasting room and the brewery are ones that we shot ourselves and are proud of. We have all lived here for 20+ years and stay here for a reason. This brewery was built with 5 years of hard work including design, securing financing, land, perfecting beer recipes, and finding the right staff. We offer our mezzanine as a “public house” where local organizations, companies, and private parties can meet (and reserve for free) to enjoy great beers, great service, and a great atmosphere. We have hosted The Montana Wilderness Association, GVLT (twice), Trout Unlimited (twice), Forest Service, amongst many other local organizations. During this time, we have also been inundated with requests for donated items, cash, and free beer. While we do everything we can to help, we also have constraints on what is realistic for a new business, as beer is our main currency. Being so busy running a new business, I can’t say that every situation or request has been thought through as entirely as it may deserve. I hope that with better understanding on your part, you will look our way again. If not, that is your decision and we respect that. I know for us, it has been a learning experience and one that will help us going forward. Thanks for bringing it to our attention!
Cheers,

Amazing the information you an get when you actually talk to someone straight instead of pulling out a "jump to conclusions" mat and put it on blast on the internet.

:) That's always been my preferred method, but then again I've been viewed as a wingnut by more than one person.

I don't drink much or hang out in bars anymore, but when I did, and the places I knew, guys like you didn't go over real well. You sound like a friendly enough guy, but TGI Fridays is definitely more your style.

Dude, If you hunt then you have a dog in this fight. After these culls get done with trapping they are going after hound hunting, then bear and lion hunting. Don't think for one minute that you don't have a dog in this fight, if your a Montana sportsman.

How's that? A bar calls itself "Sportsman's Club," has mounts all over the wall, rustic decor, and someone stumbles into it and is surprised when the staff and patrons have zero interest or knowledge in hunting. To be clear, I'm not the dude who posted the review, though I did visit it just to check it out. Bough drinks, tipped well, just not my scene. How exactly am I at fault?

I know you are not the dude who posted the review, but you posted his review and said he says it all. I see no evidence the folks had zero interest or knowledge in hunting. I just see: "I pulled up a seat at the bar and started regaling the patrons . . . I prodded . . . They looked at me like I was crazy. Imagine that?"

Indeed, imagine that.

The folks in the bars I referenced, all hunters, would have looked at him the same way, as would I. And then he judges them as a bunch of city dwelling, hand sanitizer using twerps. I've gone into places with my mouth running too but mere "looks" was a good thing. To each his own.

I'm not sure you are aware of hipsters or what their preferred habitat looks like. Irony is the hallmark of hipsterdom.

There is a difference between going somewhere to get a rise out of people and being completely clueless in a world of tripadvisor and yelp. Wearing camo shorts and a sleeveless flannel shirt around Aspen its a little different than being blind to your surroundings.

Guess I'm out of the loop. Might be a good thing. :W:

Dash,
Thanks for taking the time to come on here and talk about your business! I was curious though; you didn't address the petitioner. How did they end up in your establishment?

Please come here often and post some stories of how those mounts got on your walls!

You mean you wouldn't be enthralled and mesmerized by a well respected hunter and angler sitting down and reveling in his awesomeness? After all, the guy had taken down a charging moose at 100 yards.

Having no opinion of the bar itself, I'd probably think this guy was a dipshit too and would likely ignore him.

The anti-trapping dudes were at the bottom of the M the other day, so you guys should probably avoid that trail. Lots of yuppies and people that drive Subarus.

Sidenote: If you can't learn to live in a world where people have conflicting viewpoints, I hear Alaska has some pretty great off-the-grid kind of areas.

I'll be at Map later today for the BHA Bozeman meeting. Hope to see some of you dudes there. They've been really supportive, FYI.
