My youngest daughter came today to watch the NASCAR race with me and said I needed to stand up because she might need a hug. She then proceeded to tell me that she has a "future metal-head" coming. I'm going to be a grampa!

Congrats. We have two grandchildren which live 1/3 mile away. We see them about 60 times a year for meals, watch them for the day or go watch them at school or sporting events. Another two grandchildren live half a continent away so they visit us during spring break and we visit them twice a year and we have a monthly Zoom video call with them.

My wife and I have full lives and always have so the grandkids are additive. Is rewarding to help shape their views and nurture their interests. Is also rewarding to do things we like to do away from grandkids and other relatives.

My view is I raised my children and is now my children's chance to raise their own children. I try to stay out of offering opinions on how I might do it. Times have changed so my experiences have less validity. I have seen how parents or in-laws trying to overrule choices can be a royal pain in the backside for couples raising children. Is a good way to find yourself home alone.
