This is not for this year as I am sure I am too late to book anything. But just curious who is a reputable outfitter in unit 590 for rifle hunts? I read some reviews of one outfitter that was less than desirable and just wondering who else there is. Putting in with an older gentleman who can't do the DIY stuff and rough terrain anymore as he is now 67 years old and wants to get in on one more decent elk hunt before he hangs em up. thanks

edited to add some clarity to situation

Edited to add 590-20 north of the yellowstone

You will likely get a better sample elsewhere as this site is dedicated towards and rich with DIY, Public Land hunters. Someone might have some knowledge, but it's likely slim pickins.

Thanks. Even if guys are DIY I figured they still know who outfits in an area that is pretty much all private so not much DIY. Just thought I would ask since a lot of MT guys are on here. edited above post as to reasons why.

Dieseldog, I am assuming that you know there are only a total of 280 either sex (including mature bull) permits this 2017 rifle season. So be sure you draw a permit before you book an outfitter and expect to hunt a mature bull. If no permit, then you may hunt spikes and cows. That's it.

Yes just trying to get ahead of the game. As the one outfitter I did talk to told me he was all booked up already for bull hunts. So I am just assuming these guys book up early and then drop out if they don't draw??

590 bulls are not a pushover. There are some very nice bulls there, but for a mostly private unit the bulls are hunted very hard. Once rifle season hits they turn nocturnal and don't show back up until after season. A good outfitter will make a big difference.

590 gets piss pounded from all angles....public to private. I know zero outfitters for the area as that is the last thing I would ever concern myself with. I worked in Hardin for the past 3 years, so I could buzz up to some public and block mgmt pieces after work. You would be better off talking to some of the farmers in the Bighorn valley and paying them to hunt their land. Trust me....I have seen some whoppers taken off small tracts of farm land next to state pieces north of Hardin.

If your friend is looking for an elk where they pay some money and go shoot an elk, then it's a good tag if it can be drawn.

If they want to hunt elk, I would apply anywhere else in MT. Personally, I would take a general tag over that hunt. There's not a bull big enough in 590 for me to want to grovel or pay my way into it.

I was raised there, worked and hunted all along the north ridge. I've never applied for that tag once.

Editing to add: I've no experience with 590-20 (N of the Yellowstone). If that's what you are looking at then disregard my post.
