When hunting in the new area, how do you guys find a place to set up base camp?

In the past this has never been an issue for me because I just used a teepee tent, but now that my younger son and wife are wanting to start coming hunting each year, I needed to buy a travel trailer.

I want to figure out areas to park the trailer so I can start doing e-scouting based off of that location.

I have had the same struggles and found for where I like to hunt and style of hunting I had to set the camp trailer a few miles further away from where I would have put my wall tent. It then makes my “commute” a little longer but seems to help everyone feel comfortable.

I realized that if they were comfortable then we had more fun and stayed longer. I can sacrifice getting up earlier or getting back later for their comfort.

I have taken the trip pre season without the trailer to look for a good camp spot as well as familiarize myself with the area. Not a hardcore scouting trip, more of a getaway weekend.

If you can swing it, try to take a short trip in the summer to figure out some camping spot options. At least for me, whatever I land on with escouting tends to change when I actually go to the area. A physical trip beforehand will save you from wasting valuable hunting time. Also, suggest you line up at least 3 possible options as others could beat you to your camping spot when the season rolls around.

It all depends on the when and where. Some areas I’m not along a travel trailer. Ever. Others, early in the year yes but not later.

Some areas are easy, but I’ll likely be driving a little further on the morning/evening.

Think of worst case scenario with weather and road conditions, and ask yourself if you’re okay leaving your trailer for a while.

Always fun. I don’t have a trailer but can see the issue. I agree that being able to drive each morning might expand your options. You can usually see two tracks on satellite photos. I will also add I saw a few places in WY where people put logs and brush across the entrance to discourage others from using the spot. I heard someone call it the hillbilly reservation system.
