Check my post history- I'm 100% guilty of killing immature deer as well. I managed to hold off and eat my tag in '20, but not in '21. Had a 3x4 staring me down at 20 yards on the last day I had to hunt for the year, and just couldn't bring myself to pass up the steaks. Packed it out nearly 3 miles, just to have a truly mature buck in the headlights at the trailhead- talk about salt in the wound.#1.. unequivocal yes. In general season areas
#2. Harvest rates for elk are dismal.
If you want to shoot 2 yr old md/wt and call that success, well it’s your decision
FWP has to restrict numbers of ppl on accessible land.
Your pt of R hunters having killed “everything” is appropriate. Go to a mest
Locker last week season and see number of immature md killed by R hunters to “fill my tag”.
Very few R hunters will “let’em go to grow” and nearly 0 NR “diy” will let them go
All that to say- yes, FWP will have to regulate hunter numbers on accessible land, because we will never collectively have enough self-control to allow deer to mature in appropriate numbers, because I haven't run across anyone else in the field that would pass on a 2.5 year old deer.
