Axl and I met up with GFhunter yesterday to fill the freezer. I had three tags and GF had another. We walked into the area in the dark and split up. I sat on a small ridge overlooking the Missouri River and waited for some light.
Right away, I had a few muleys around me, but I wanted to shoot a whitey first as they tend to get a little more elusive when guns start banging. Finally had one coming towards me, but it was a spike. Got the binos out and watched him work a scrape. I also saw a few whitey does, but they were out about 250 and I thought they would eventually get a little closer.
Finally, after being hounded by the spike, they were at 200 and I dropped a doe. Everything blew up for a minute and then silence, for a mintue, then I heard Dean shoot. Guess he was waiting on me, as he told me he passed on a doe earlier because see was so close.
I just sat tight and then saw another whitey in the area. Put a quick sneak on and shot her at about 100 yards. I was a little disappointed with the reaction of both deer. Both were angling, but I took out a lung on both. I am not used to deer running much after taking a bullet, but both of these did. Wasn't all bad though as I shot them quite aways from each other but they ended up about 20 yards apart when they hit the ground and closer to the road.
Figured I had better get to the pick-up and grab the sled. On the walk out, I ran into a muley doe. I learned my lesson and put high on her neck. See was history before she hit the ground.
Not a bad meat hunt. Four deer in less than 1/2 hour. Now, better get back to the processing.
