Ask an Aussie Hunter any question!

Kanagaroos are protected but most farmers have cull permits to shoot thousands,

I grew up on a farm and made a career in conservation for the govt so I've had a fair amount of experience with roo control and that's a big stretch. The vast majority of control permits are for between 20-40 animals.

Have you ever eaten kangaroo? How do they taste?

Not bad, similar taste to venison but more gamey. I'd never take it over a deer. We have the opposite system to you guys. Natives are all protected so there is no regulated recreational hunting of kangaroos/wallabies, only market hunting. If the average joe wants to eat it you need to buy it. Kangaroo meat is all wild, they're not able to be domesticated like deer or bison for meat production.

Cairns is ok... much better places to visit.
Tassie is awesome, i shoot the state DTL titles there every year and love going back there.
Cant climb the rock anymore as the aboriginals protested and the government shut it down. You can still drive up and walk around it :(

I am sorry to hear that the Cairns area has deteriorated . At one time an hour north would put you into some beautiful country and a short helicopter or boat ride to the barrier reef, which IMHO is still some of the best scuba diving in the world, or was.--was very enjoyable. And the city was charming, but I am sure it has changed in the last 30 cities, everything does. But you are correct, Australia has a bit of everything --something for everyone.

I found the men in Australia to be a bit more chauvinistic than our chaps in America (-:

Just depends on what you are after and expecting, there are a lot better places to get out to the reef and stay at etc

If I ever hunted there, I would like to hunt water buffalo, scrub bull, camels, and kangaroo. How difficult is the process to hunt these critters without a guide? Is it even possible? Can it be done on public land? Thanks!
Camels?? Really? Like hunting horse. Why shoot livestock?🤨

Didn't a well known fast food chain put horse meat in burgers? :D
I would eat it, but I just like to know what I'm eating!
Shooting a horse/camel, no different to the guys shooting zebras is it?;)
Cheers
Richard
I wouldn't be surprised if they did! I'd shoot a zebra too.

I wish my area had a wild burro season. They are thick as fleas and compete with the desert mule deer for the limited resources.

Guys and Gals, S13tsilvia lives there and has current knowledge. I have no problem sharing with you my thoughts and thank you for your "messages" , but my thoughts and knowledge is "dated"

However (-:

Having said that I absolutely loved flying into Cairns and then visiting the rain forest. I thought it was absolutely beautiful ! And if you like water activities, I still recommend

Lizard Island Resort, a short plane ride from Cairns
Green Island Resort, a short boat ride from Cairns
Niramaya Resort in Port Douglas, a short car ride from Cairns

Some areas of the world always drew me back and this was one area that did that

AND speaking of Australia: Mary Phillips, a lady from Australia who now resides in Tenn. is a hunter and one whom I hopes joins Hunt Talk ( as usual she is receiving a bit of "flak' for being a hunter, but she will be just fine )

Noharleyyet: Sept 1st is just around the corner, so I am off (-: And thank you for posting those three tunes for me. It has been a long time since I was in a itsey bitsy yellow polka dot bikini (-:

Here's 2 sambar stags out hound crew got yesterday, unfortunately I can't go at the moment with the covid lockdowns but some of the other boys are able to get out and chase em around the lucky buggers

I have a desire to go on a "traditional" horse and hound fox hunt. April has given me contact information to people in Ireland . She thinks the horse and hound hunting of Roebucks is still going strong in France, but I want to go on a traditional horse and hound fox hunt before they are gone forever. She thought Australia might still offer this hunt, but she did not remember a lot of stone fences to jump or what other differences you might have, or not allow, compared to the original horse and hound fox hunt. She recommended I ask you. Have you participated or have knowledge of these hunts ?

Personally I haven't heard of them but some googling should bring something up. Our fox drives normally consist of a dozen fox terriers, lots of blackberry bushes and a heap of blokes and a pile of dead foxes
