Arizona hunt 2019 Coconino National Forest Unit 6A

Good morning all. We are going to Sedona Arizona for a couple of days and renting a house next week. I got to looking at a map of units near Sedona and 6a borders it. I'm recovering from surgery so i won't be doing much of anything just take it easy, so I've decided to bring my Nikon binocs. But I would like to hear from some Arizona hunters. Due to chronic elbow and shoulder problems I've had to lay down the bow so it would be a rifle hunt that we would be interested in. Any advice on applying for tags or intel for a non resident on the unit would be appreciated. What's allowed, what's not allowed. We drew in Montana this year but would like to try a different state every year. I'm not getting any younger.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I take it you have no points in Arizona yet? The easiest rifle tag to draw in unit 6A is the late rifle hunt which occurs around the first week of December. The odds in 2017 with 0 points were 3.2%, and you weren’t guaranteed the tag unless you had 7 points or more. You could draw the first few years but odds aren’t great.

You are correct, I have no points. When I saw where we would be the thought of hunting Arizona crossed my mind. December huh, weather could be nasty. I do have a muzzleloader we could try. Or where could a first time non resident applicant try? thanks for your insight wannakillabigbull

6A is managed more of an opportunity unit then a trophy unit in Arizona. There is a lot of tags in that unit but it is a fairly large unit with a good population of elk in there. There is Nov muzzleloader hunt in that unit that I have had several buddies that were successful on it, the muzzy hunt has slightly better odds. Your best shot at drawing a rifle tag, in my opinion, would be over by Payson. The weather in December isn't that bad, it is Arizona. I have had colder weather in the first season in Colorado then AZ late hunts. If you wanna draw a rifle tag its going to be a late hunt, the early rifle hunts are incredibly hard to draw even for a resident much less a non res with no points. My father in law has 17 points and my wife 12 points as residents chasing those tags.
