Archery Advice

Oh man I thought you were picking up the bow Ken. I did a double take. I imagine the boy is just looking for something for targets for now?

Bear has some great youth recurve options for well under $100.
Draw length: 16"-24"
Draw weight: 5-18 lbs

Lots of "starter" adjustable bows out there for kids. Don't expect fantastic shooting results with any of them! They all are made to fit different draw lengths and poundages which makes for very loose tolerances as far as accuracy goes. They are mainly good for seeing if the kids have any interest in continuing with archery or if it's just a passing hobby. No point in spending big bucks on a top notch outfit if they quit shooting it after a month. Try just about any of them, see if he likes it, then when he grows you can look into a more "permanent" outfit.

Hard to beat a bowtech diamond
I'll second this.
I bought one of these bows for my son when he was showing interest at 10-11 years old. It has been great for him and he still uses it (age 16 now). He will be hunting javelina with it in a couple months (again).
I was surprised at how much adjustment has been necessary as he grew (due to him, not the bow). Kids that age are growing quickly so draw length and draw weight change as well. This bow is very easy to make those adjustments with.

All of the big box stores sell full setups that are adjustable from just a few pounds all the way up to 70 with adjustable draw length. Most come with a 3 pin sight and a whisker biscuit rest. They are good starter bows. All you would need to add is arrows and a release. I started my boy with one of these package bows made by Bear.

I’ve been looking at the $350 R2S Bear setups for my 10 year old. Goes all the way from like 20lbs to 65 lbs or something. Can come back to it and readjust as he ages and try to get back into it or whatever..

The cheapy bows IMO have only taught him poor technique/form and it’s only going to get harder to correct. I should have just got him a real compound bow with a peep and release from the beginning. Let us know what you decide go with and how it works out!

Mathews Genesis works for my boy and is the bow they use in the archery in the schools program. Not really gonna be something he can grow into to kill a deer but a good basic kid bow perfect for learning the fundamentals of archery.
This is what I'm looking at too. Oldest boy is gonna get a bow this spring.

Got my 7yo son a bear Royale it is crazy adjustable and will grow with him for several years. No bow press needed to adjust draw length or weight.

I've been a certified NASP instructor sense before I had kids and have used them a ton. IMO perfect learning bow unless you want something they can eventually turn into a hunting bow.
Likewise I taught archery as a NASP certified instructor in our little rural school for years. 4th through 8th graders learned to shoot the Mathews Genesis which can be adjusted down for the younger archers. It was always gratifying and impressive to watch them gain proficiency, confidence, and self esteem from successful shooting learning process.

My granddaughter took first place in the annual school tournament, then ask me to take her grouse hunting. First hunt, first shot, right off the get-go ... she shot one in the head with her recently acquired personally owned bow.
