Hi guys,

I’m hopeful there’s a guy or two on this site that knows more than their fair share about the breaks and the elk that call it home.

Before I go any further, I have researched the latest Montana FWP wintering elk number estimates (as well as the ones before that) and read as much as I can about all the units. I also know that, simply, these units aren’t what they used to be as that’s what everyone seems to say.

But frankly, it’s on my bucket list to hunt the breaks one day and with having 7 nonresident bonus points, I’m going to finally apply for an archery tag and a realistic chance to draw, instead of just swinging for the fences while I built like I have in years past.

I have a decent chance to draw seemingly any unit. a couple are of course slam dunks and others are not. I simply want to apply for the one that fits my style best, and hoping I can bounce some ideas off of others before applying next year and have a firm grasp on what to expect.

Please send me a message if you’re willing to chat. I’m more than willing to repay the favor and lead someone in the right direction for Wyoming elk if they’re interested in hunting it someday soon.

Thank FWP for exterminating the elk with their comically low population objectives for elk.

You'd do well to scout a lot of different areas and get boots on the ground. They can be anywhere up there.

Out of curiosity with that many points on the line ever consider scouting it during season prior to drawing a tag?

And the folks that will try and claim your bull.
Did you have this happen? I would think with rifle season there wouldn't be that many bull hunters. I'm heading up there with a bull tag in a couple weeks...wasn't even considering that nightmare scenario.

622. Last time I had the tag was in 2012. Will be a great time with my wife, hoping for a bull but I REALLY don't want the hassle of another hunter trying to claim a bull I killed.

I've had 2 friends that have drawn the rifle tag in the breaks in the last 4 years and they had a hell of a time finding any decent bulls.

One guy ended up shooting a bull that was just under 300 and the other one never filled his tag. Both of them hunted hard. It just isn't much to get excited about anymore. I honestly wouldn't trade my otc tag for it these days

I know of two people it has happened to during archery. My old Fed Ex driver arrowed a bull, waited 30 minutes to look for it. When he got to it, a group of guys had tagged it and were guarding it with pistols and AR’s. More of them than him. Argument ensued, he called game warden but warden wouldn’t do anything because it was one man’s word against the other. And other guy tagged it first.

Similar story for other one but no firearms involved. Both people arrowed a bull but someone else tagged it.

I’ve hunted cows in nearby district without incident. I definitely don’t think it’s the norm but does happen.

Seems like a arrow count should have taken place

Only one arrow to count but more of the other guys. Don’t know the minutiae of details, just know they arrowed a bull but someone else claimed it.
