Any CO bulls down?

Yes, it is 3:00pm in the afternoon and these elk are in the middle of the valley floor like it is freakin Yellowstone. He’s bugling and tending his cows. How can I resist? We have the wind coming out of the south/south West. I want to just sneak down and shoot the bull but I’m worried the Aspens are too thick to see out of when I get down there. The hill is SUPER steep and has the little rotten broken rocks on it that are like marbles, noisy going.

I start out and make it 30 yards down the hill then chicken out because I already lose sight of the elk. The bull bugles again and I decide I have to go. It is early enough in the day if we spook him we can find another! I ease down there only moving when the wind hits the Aspen leaves. I can see his cows to my right feeding up the valley. I can also see him to my left at about 100 yards facing away while raking some willows. I can see a trail in the meadow going towards the cows. I range it at 79 yards and set up tight against an Aspen tree and wait for him to make his move. It only takes 5 minutes or so and he is headed that way……

Shortly after I hear the blam, cows start drifting past me at about 30 yards, tongues hanging.

After the cows passed and I heard Dink whoop, I headed down the hill. Busted out of the trees and saw this...

So how rare is it to have a bull down in a flat wide open meadow at 3:30 pm. Sunny skies, warm and plenty of help? First night of the full moon to hike out with……………

Absolutely the perfect day to kill an elk.

Bronco colors. Sweet!Congrats Dink and Oak on a great hunt, and thanks for the great read fellas! Now, I know there is a little more to the story, pack out?, more stuck-in-the-mud action?,

Great photo story and write up...way to go guys. Those last two pics are epic, even with the ugly mugs! ;)

Man he is a dandy! Great bull!!! --- - that coat on that elk is gorgeous. Did Oak wash and groom that sucker before the hero shot or what?

No more suprises. Great hike out in the full moon that I declared to be death bed material, nothing better. Back in the next morning for the other half.

Thanks to Oak for this shot that will win me Colorado's Sexiest Elk Hunter 2013. I mean just look at those legs!

It was a beautiful cape. We were going to take it but thought the ear split would be a problem. That and we were just plain lazy.
