Looks like I may be getting a new computer, whats the best protection from virus & hackers,
Norton or McAfee ?

Acon,
Check out Dell's offer of the week on their website. If you can wait a week they alternate between adding stuff(if you need it) or free shipping($99 ave.). Specials change every Weds. Normal house unit is around $500, comes with Norton and earthlink or customize online.

be careful buying brand name pc's they have a propritary board/parts in them. basically if your mother board goes out you must purchase it through them and it will cost sometimes more than the pc. this also goes for sound cards and video cards since they are built into the motherboard, so basically if a sound card goes bad you need a new mother board.

Packard bell was known for this.

del computers are good units and you can add stuff onto them with no problems they are also 100% upgradeable where as some of the others are not.
I build all my own pcs so I dont have to worry about it. you might want to hit a local pc shop and have them put one together, you should be able to get good pricing since your not getting all the garbage software most companies send you and load into your pc.

As far as anti virus software I dont use it anymore, I hit alot of sites too.
software that you should get are
spamcatcher
and
spy bot search and destroy

spy bots seem to come up more than virus's these days and are a real pain in the butt.

My suggestion is look at what your going to use it for and go off that for your specs. Dell is ok but my school buys in mass quantity and good friend bought brand new one and most are crap. Problem from the start missing drivers for hardware, continuous crashes, etc... I would say go with Sony or alienware, either you can buy use and on auction sites and lot higher quality. Never get emachines they are cheap but you get what you pay for, worse than dell!

Stay out of the Porn and Online Game sites and you are usually pretty safe... ;)

A-con - In case it's not too late, I have a combination of anti-virus and firewall software that is coming up bulletproof. Trend Micro for anti-virus, and ZoneAlarms Pro for firewall. I got both straight from the internet. I looked around the geek bbs sites over a three-month period, and found that this combination was hard to top. Trend has their own firewall in their anti-virus package, but it isn't as good as ZoneAlarms.

Trend isn't that good if you ask me, I had it and when it did a scan it located and deleted all my .exe files and found itself as virus and deleted. And it's not just porn and online game sites anymore a newer one called Ncase created by 180 solutions has found itself all across the web from gaming sites to webmd course its considered adware/spyware and they can legally allowed to install on your machine without your permission go figure huh. Been checking on legalitys of this adware stuff and so far sucks what they can get away with.

I going to wait and do a bit more research.
Found out my old computer seems to be so loaded with "spy-bots" that all the hard drive is used up, not even enough left to run Juno.
I'm useing my work computer for now.
The old one is windows 95, 200 meg prosser, so I still need a new one.

Does antbody have the name & adress of the person responsable for these "spy-bots" ?
I'd like to find that guy in a dark alley give him a few noogies.

I agree with Hangar on this one. I use Trend Micro for antivirus and firewall both and have never had any problems. I used to use McAfee and it let through a virus that destroyed my computer. Had to spend $300 to get my stuff recovered and reinstalled and I wasn't able to recover everything. Reminder: Backup Backup Backup. If you haev a CD burner, back everything up at least once a month so you don't lose important files. It has been my general opinion that McAfee and Norton both pretty much suck. I don't claim to be an expert, but the experts I have spoken to all agree that those two are mostly worthless.

A great program to keep the spywear off your computer is SpywearBlaster. Since I put that on I do not need to run Ad-aware or Spybot Search & Detroy but only once in awhile just to check.

Elkhunter nailed it with SpywearBlaster. One program instead of two. At the very minimum you should download Spybot Search & Destroy, that gets rid of 98% of the problems with spyware. Ad-aware is kind of a cleanup. Combine that with running good virus and firewall software, and you are good to go.

Norton sucks because it interferes with other programs running, or at least it did with Win95 & 98. I have read that McAfee may get bought out by Microsoft, which means it will turn to shit.

Another good one to check out is PC-cillin.

Here is a good site to start your research as far as firewalls go.

http://www.grc.com/default.htm Find the Shields Up and Leak Test links to test your system.

I think Trend Micro and PC-Cillin are the same thing. I agree that Spybot is great, especially if you are already infected. Another thing to consider is your connection. I have a DSL and can use a router as a physical firewall. If you have a DSL/ethernet connection, consider spending the $100 or so for a router box. The bonus is you can also use the router to connect several computers to the same incoming line without paying for more than one line.

Nothing like giving the internet/phone company the ol'

how many virus's do you guys get? I am just curious because I never get any and I check out alot of sites. I do get alot of spy bots but get rid of them every night.

One thing I dont do is open emails with attached files unless I know the person and there pc.

I pretty much dump all emails in the garbage and if they have an exe extension I usually foward them back to others who send me files like that. ;) dat files are other ones I send back to different people to.

I have only had one virus, and that was back in 1998. Norton runs every night for me. It picks up some on the incoming mail and they are automaticly deleted. I only rund Search and Destroy to as a double check and seems like none of the spy bots get pass the SpywearBlaster which is also free.

I agree with Elkhunter. I installed Spyware Blaster (free online from MajorGeeks) and since I installed that, AdAware has only found a few in the past 2 months. Instead of finding them and cleaning them off, Spyware Blaster prevents them from installing. I also use the Google Toolbar for popup blocking. Seems to work really well.
