Anti Virus programs

I guess no one here has ran into trojans, which are becoming more and more popular. All the software thus far suggested is obselete when trojans or wormz are to be considered. they will cause automatic deletion(depending on worm/trojan) of any .exe file or application only got once but wiped hard drives clean, internal drives and external drives. It uses your "antivirus software" as a slave and starts deletion. I visit mostly normal sites and stay away from warez and cracked file site too. Beaware of capabilities of reverse engineers today.

CritterGetter,

You are right, if you have a trojan or worm prior to installing your anti-virus software. Most cases you are screwed. My Trend Micro updates at daily. I also have the benefit of Cableone.net catching 100% (so far) of viruses/wormz/trojans attached to email. So I dodged a bullet prior to putting up the anti-virus and firewall.

That's precisely why you have the firewall software. I don't have the option of having a router, so I need to use firewall software. What my ZoneAlarm software does is prompt / alert me that an application is trying to connect to the internet. I can deny or approve, incidently or globally. MS Messenger is a huge hole in Windows, as is Windows Installer. You really have to educate yourself on which programs/applications are necessary to connect to the web. If you run XP or Win2000, open the task manager and click on the Processes tab. You can type the name of the process into Google and find out what it does.
