Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

Another MFW dumb regulation change

They older folks just have to take MT online hunters safety course.
So they have an online course now? Sorry to hear Montana has joined that circus. But not surprised. As far as I know Ontario/Canada still requires in-person hunters safety/firearms course although severely dumbed down from when I took it back in 1990. That was a rigorous exam! The manual was quite the publication. At least with in-person course the instructor is accountable for making sure the person taking the course and exam is actually the same person enrolled.

That is what caused the legislative “fix” to require past license “and” hunters Ed.

People were supposedly taking online hunters Ed and then applying for come home to hunt

It certainly looks like this is a thinly disguised attempt to phase out the Come Home to Hunt program. From what I have been told we are not taking a big bite out of the resource as there's always lots of tags left over every year.

This is a bad idea to begin with. You either live in Montana or you don’t.

Allowing servicemen the ability to return to Montana for hunting is a different story, but the claim of coming home and then going back to your real home needs to be treated as any other non resident.

Was it formerly past license or hunters ed? I thought past license was always a requisite for applying. Hmmm. Well then, that fix makes sense.

Is it such a "bad idea?" I lived in Montana from age two weeks until 1987 when I met my wife. I paid taxes there from 1970 till then (and then again 2007-2008 when I was working snd living in Chinook). My family has continued to live there and pay taxes since 1952. I still own the family home in Montana (but owning property rightly does not constitute residency). So I and my family have invested a lot in Montana and continue to do so.

Now, compare that to the out of state guy with no personal or family residential history who moves to Montana, camps there for six months, and buys an el cheapo resident elk tag (vs my $600 one). Who has invested the most in keeping the state afloat?

No matter how you want to paint it, you need to be weaned. You aren’t a resident, you made your choice, now deal with it.

You might learn not to glass with a rifle scope if you take it.

IMO, shouldn’t matter how long you have lived anywhere, matters where you currently live.
I'm glad the state takes a better view to preserving Montana family traditions. Like I said, it's not like this is putting a big dent in the resource at the expense of other non-residents. The meager draw quota is apparently never filled.

No one knows why the FWP system won't let me input and/or submit but she could do it on her end. I'm not alone.
Pilot error?

You are a non resident plain and simple. The past doesn’t matter. The gimme MT tags needs to end.

My dad is my primary hunting partner. Has been my whole life. Know how I kept those Montana family traditions?

It's a sweet heart deal passed by the GOP in Montana to allow their kids to come back home to hunt and not have to apply or pay full boat. It's a rather socialist program for blood red Montana...but their conservative values only go as far as when there is a personal benefit to them and their families. Then, socialism isn't such a bad idea.

At the very least there should be a change made to at least make them full price nr fees.

This program has been around a long time. It may be GOP but I don't think so. I first learned about it during a past Dem administration. And yes, we do have to apply and there is a quota for these packages.

I don't apply...mine is otc and I already have the 2022 deer combo in hand. The GOP passed it.

When was the last time the Montana legislature was controlled by democrats?

Yeah....that's what I thought.

Also, I'm pretty sure this passed in 2010, so the whole program is not that old.

In the time I have used Come Home to Hunt I have only run into one other family that was using it. An old SxS hunter I met near Dillon who transplanted to Montana several years ago after he retired had a son who was a successful engineer and relocated briefly to Montana. The son had been using the program. Sadly, because the fella was a marathon man he thought he was immune to COVID. He died a few weeks before hunting season. The old fella was really beating himself up over not pressuring his kid more to get vaxed. I really felt for him having lost my own boy eleven years ago. Anyway, that's the only person I have met who has taken advantage of the program to stay connected with a family member. All the strings attached don't make it easy. For me, my brother is 72 and diabetic (since age 26) so I can't beat the bush like I normally would. I have to hunt with him and he has limitations.

Right. The governor was Democrat as I recall. He could veto it.

Edit: Right, Schweizer was governor in 2010 and he had no problem vetoing GOP legislation (95 times during his administration). Was he the guy that chartered the buses to take Montana elderly across the border to buy prescription drugs?
