Advise for new rifle in 300 win mag or 300 PRC

Hey everyone, looking for a new mountain rifle. I’m looking for a 300 win mag and am considering a 300 PRC as well, but more leaning on the 300 win mag bullet. I currently have a savage 110 in 270 high country edition and love it. I am highly considering getting this edition in 300 win mag as well. Before I do that, I am just looking like any good consumer would. Reliability is #1 and features that go along with that like threaded barrel, protective coating(s), ease of use and breakdown, construction quality, and customers service are all considerations. Plus, I like American made Again, trying to get a great rifle for the price matching features. There should be a ton of conversation about this topic. Thanks to everyone for their input.

I personally don't have much interest in telling people what rifle to choose, but I am interested in the 300 PRC. Curious if it will be more than a fad cartridge, with the plethora of .30 cal rounds available already.

300 PRC has some great ballistic data but ammo is difficult to find, unless you reload. We will see if it catches on.

I agree, I had to double take in its consideration of the 300 PRC. It’s ballistics and weight(s) are awesome but availability might be a fad. Especially in the hunting realm. Only time will tell....

I have an X-bolt and a B 14

B 14 (short action):
7 lbs
Shoots about .75 MOA with factory ammo
22inch barrel (threaded)

X-Bolt (long action)
6.75 lbs (with wood stock -composite would be lighter)
Shoots about 1 MOA with factory ammo
26inch barrel (not threaded)

The Bergara trigger is better than the browning.

I would go with a Savage or bergara from your list, you miss spelled Bergara by the way For caliber way more factory options out there for win mag, if you reload doesn't matter. PRC has a better case design since its not belted. PRC will push a heavier bullet a little faster, in the hunting world it won't matter what cartridge you go with.

Tikka aren't american made if that's a sticking point.

I see a lot of price variation in your options, do you have a budget? In aus we have the luxury of not having any rifle makers so we aren't governed by patriotism just what's good. Sako are one of the most popular rifles here, if you're forking out for a Mk V consider a sako 85 finnlite or if you have the money to burn and want a light rifle an 85 carbonlite.

My brother is always banging on about his 300 WM fierce. Lot of money for a gun that goes bang, but he loves it and it's red, blue and white!

Lot of variance in $$ of those listed. All I can say is I have a Nosler .30. it is the single greatest gun I have ever had. Shoots 1/2 groups.

My next rifle will be a Nosler Mountain Carbon. 6 lb gun.

For what is worth I have Remington 700 SPS in 300WM that I bought 20 years ago. Its a great gun, but that was Remington back then. Killed lots and lots of elk with it.

I have X-Bolt HC and love it. Shot tight groups out to 500-600 yds. Muzzle break helps a lot in making it comfortable to shot. Light weight also.

My mate is just going through the process of getting his first deer rifle. I got him onto a tikka 308. Can't go wrong with them. My mountain rifle is a Sako A7, good value and great shooter.

If you dont want to screw around with setting up and want a rifle ready to, get a hold of Adventure Armory in Oregon. They can set you up a Bergara, with scope and ammo. All ready to out of the box.

It is “fun” to experiment but I have to agree with a grain of salt added that lol!, this is the reason I’m looking for a “new” rifle setup because my current rifle is about as good as a boat paddle. Very frustrated with my current 300 win mag selection and I’m ready to move on. I’d love to just have the setup that works perfectly. Every time I pull that rifle out of the safe it operates the way it’s meant to, every time. Gotta say that’s what I love about this 270 savage high country I purchased this past year for deer. Yeah, it’s fun to play but after awhile you just want what’s trusted and reliable. That’s why I’m diligently asking opinions, perspectives, and satisfied customers for their input. Go 300 win mag then. Tons of factory rounds to figure out what your gun likes. My guess is most PRC factory rounds will be match style bullets.
